Sprint Technical support said there are service towers down in the area, causing troubled cell service.

For the Roanoke Rapids area, three of the four towers are down. One of the towers has been down pending upgrades, the other two are down due to technical issues.

One of the towers is estimated to be back up at 9 p.m. today. The other is set to be up again at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Technical support said customers may experience dropped or blocked calls, as well as weak to no service, depending on the condition of the phone. The towers being upgraded still can send out a signal, but the strength of the signal will vary. Customers could be able to get services such as 4G and Internet connectivity during the upgrades.

Sprint services said even though the towers being upgraded are down, they are not “necessarily down” because the towers are still sending out signals, adding if a phone is in good enough condition it will be able to pick up the signal.

Customers may also experience roaming in the area because of the down towers.

There is currently no way to see how many customers are being impacted by these outages due to differences in proximity to the towers.

If Sprint customers have any questions about service, they are asked to call 888-211-4727.
