Vera Bullock Lee

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Lt. Col. Vera Bullock Lee, USAF retired, 89, passed away Thursday, July 31, 2003, in Spokane, Wash.

Mrs. Lee was born Oct. 30, 1913, in Roanoke Rapids, the oldest of 11 children. She worked in the cotton mills at night while maintaining a straight "A" average and graduating from Roanoke Rapids High School. She then went to Norfolk, Va., for nurses training. Her military career spanned 30 years beginning as a nurse anesthetist in World War II. She also served 10 years in the civil service and two years with the Peace Corps, training nurses in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia.

She volunteered for 15 years through the Red Cross at the Fairchild AFB hospital resulting in the establishment of the Vera B. Lee Volunteer of the Year Award given annually in her honor. She lived a full, wonderful life, and never wasted a day.

Mrs. Lee was preceded in death by her husband, George Robert "Bob" Lee.

She is survived by a brother, Curtis Bullock of Littleton; her sisters, Laura Pearson, Annie Boyd, Lillian Cross and Evelyn Honeycutt, all of Roanoke Rapids, Marilyn Bernardini of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Marie Case of Orange City, Fla.; as well as a large family of close friends.

Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home, 1306 North Monroe St., Spokane, is handling the arrangements, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 3, in the Alwin Chapel.
