ROANOKE RAPIDS - An illegal Mexican immigrant is in jail under $100,000 bond after Roanoke Rapids police charged him with trafficking a kilo of powdered cocaine.

In a joint effort with the U.S. Department of Immigration and Naturalization Service, Police Department Agents James Ayers and Roy Ball charged Evaristo Leon Lozano, 19, of 318 Jackson St., with trafficking cocaine, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine and maintaining a dwelling to keep a controlled substance.

Police seized the cocaine, which was stored in a saddle tree that had been cut out and resealed, Detective Lt. Ron Baird said. INS agents intercepted the cocaine while it was en route to Roanoke Rapids. Baird declined to say where the cocaine was intercepted. He did say it was sent from Mexico. A courier delivered the package to Lozano on Jackson Street around 5:45 p.m. Thursday.

Baird said the cocaine had a street level value of $150,000 and was probably meant for distribution within the Roanoke Valley. It is probably part of a Mexican drug pipeline, he said.

Lozano has been living in Roanoke Rapids for five to six months and has no visible means of support, Baird said.

Police are continuing to investigate the case. Lozano's next court appearance will be Nov. 26.

The police department's uniform, special response team and drug unit participated in the arrest.
