ROANOKE RAPIDS - Charges have been filed in a Jan. 15 collision that claimed the life of a Roanoke Rapids woman.

Steven Craig Jones, 20, faces charges of misdemeanor death by vehicle, careless and reckless driving and possession of a spirituous liquor by a person 19 or 20 years old, Capt. J.K. Hinton of the Roanoke Rapids Police Department said this morning.

The warrants were filed Wednesday but have not been served. "They will be served as soon as Mr. Jones is able to have them served on him," Hinton said.

Jones was just recently released from Pitt County Memorial Hospital where he was treated for the injuries he received in the accident.

Hinton said additional charges could be filed against Jones pending the results of blood tests. He declined to elaborate.

According to investigators, Jones was traveling east on Fifth Street at a high rate of speed when he crossed the center line and entered the westbound lane, striking a Dodge Neon operated by Derrick Green. Green's mother, Gladys, a passenger in the car, died. Derrick Green was treated and released from Halifax Regional Medical Center.

The accident report says Jones was traveling 61 mph in a 25 mph zone when the accident occurred. Derrick Green was driving the speed limit. The report also notes there was a bottle of Everclear liquor broken underneath Jones's left lower leg.

Jones also faces charges from an accident involving alcohol usage that occurred Oct. 2. He is scheduled to appear in court March 16 on charges of DWI, driving after consuming when less than 21, failing to comply with license restriction, failure to reduce speed, fictitious or revoked registration card or tag, following too close and possession of an open container.

According to the report at that accident, Jones's blood alcohol content at the time was 0.14 percent.
