ROANOKE RAPIDS - Rainbow Rescue founder Nancy Seevers hopes the world of hurt is reversed Friday when the man accused of abusing a young dog goes before the judge on a felony charge.

Sweetie, as she has been named, was found in May with a wire twisted around her waist. Animal control officer Robert J. Richardson arrested the alleged owner, Robert Lee Richardson, who is unrelated to the officer, and charged him with felony cruelty to animals. Richardson's bond was set at $1,000.

Sweetie was placed in a foster home through Rainbow Rescue, where she is recovering, Seevers said. A veterinarian removed the wire and prescribed a topical ointment for the wound.

Two weeks later, the gash around her waist is narrowing a little, Seevers said, and is about two inches wide. Sweetie has another vet appointment today to check the wound and get more medication.

"She's doing great. It seems to be healing," Seevers said. "She just wants to run and play."

Seevers said she plans to be in District Court Friday to follow the legal side of the case. Richardson is scheduled to go before Judge H. Paul McCoy Jr. in Courtroom 2 sometime after the session begins at 9:30 a.m.

"My hope would be that he would get that he could never own another dog and would have to pay some of her medical expenses," she said.

For now, Sweetie is being walked three times a day and likes to play with her foster mate, a stray named Cinnamon, who was found with a crushed nose, Seevers said.

Rainbow Rescue needs donations to help fund veterinary treatment for Sweetie and other abused and stray animals. Anyone wishing to help can send contributions to Rainbow Rescue, P.O. Box 741, Roanoke Rapids NC 27870.
