Gilchrist to resign tonight

Halifax County Schools Superintendent Willie Gilchrist will formally resign his post tonight to become the interim chancellor of Elizabeth City State University - his alma mater. School officials confirmed Gilchrist told the Halifax staff this morning of his intention to announce his decision at tonight's school board meeting. Gilchrist began his career as a teacher and counselor and worked his way up from assistant principal to associate superintendent of schools in Northampton County, according to officials. In 1994, Gilchrist was appointed superintendent of Halifax County Schools. Current ECSU Chancellor Mickey L. Burnim announced Friday that he was leaving to become president of Bowie State University.
