Officers have not released the name of the driver of a Ford Bronco, who ran head-on into a tractor-trailer around 7:35 a.m., near William R. Davie Middle School.
The impact of the crash buckled the white Bronco but did not pin its driver in, Davie Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief David Padgett said at the scene.
Halifax County Emergency Medical Services employees held a white sheet over the back of the vehicle as they took the driver's body out and placed it in a green plastic bag, which was covered with more white sheets.
Trooper Tommy Davis of the state Highway Patrol said the Bronco apparently crossed the center line and collided with the tractor-trailer, which was on its side about 50 yards from the Bronco, and another vehicle, which was damaged in the wreck.
As far as investigators could immediately tell, the truck driver, whose wife said he was shaken up but OK, did nothing that would cause the driver of the Bronco to shift lanes.
Troopers remained on the scene as of press deadline this morning to investigate the accident. The portion of the highway where the accident occurred was blocked off and traffic was rerouted onto Everetts School Road.
