He said the complaint may be of a criminal nature. He declined to give any more details.
Rumors began circulating Thursday about a teacher arrested and escorted from the school, but Lawson said no one has been arrested and no charges have been filed.
This morning, Roanoke Rapids Graded School District Superintendent Dennis Sawyer released the following statement: “I can't comment on a personnel matter except to say the teacher was suspended Wednesday, Feb. 21, so we could investigate. The investigation is under way and we will move quickly to guarantee that appropriate actions will take place.
“The school system is cooperating with the criminal investigation in progress with the Roanoke Rapids Police Department. As always, the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District will take every step necessary to ensure the safety of our students.”
Sawyer gave few comments Friday morning, concerned with personnel laws and not wanting to hinder the police investigation. He added that the safety of the students was most important, and said school officials moved quickly as soon as they heard the complaint.
“I think the rumor mill is alive and well, but we are just trying to move forward with it and take the necessary steps to handle it,” he said.
