Yellow Jacket Golf Finishes Third at Maccripine

Roanoke Rapids (25-3, 9-0 Northern Carolina) was tripped up by CB Aycock and Southwest Edgecombe Tuesday in a match played at Maccripine Country Club. The Jackets finished seven strokes behind CB Aycock and one behind Edgecombe. Colby Lyles was named Match Medalist with a low round score of 73.

“We were competitive with two teams that will probably qualify for the 3A state tournament, which is positive,” Jackets coach Tad Merritt said. “With regionals only a few weeks away, it's important that we get stronger in the middle and bottom of our line-up. We are shooting good scores as a team, but not good enough to qualify for states out of our region. We'll need to cut it down to about 310-315 to have a shot. Colby Lyles being medalist in the field of players today is a great accomplishment. He's getting ready to play his best golf of the year down the stretch. Andrew Thiele has been showing great leadership as our senior captain and has raised the level of his game as well. This team has the potential to do something special.”

Team scores: CB Aycock 320, Southwest Edgecombe 326, Roanoke Rapids 327, Rocky Mount 342.

Roanoke Rapids individual scores: Colby Lyles, 73; Andrew Thiele, 80; Taylor Merritt, 85; Brad Silver, 89; Nathan Wilson, 89; Tyler Wilson, 95.

Lady Jackets Win at Southern Vance

Roanoke Rapids (14-0-1) traveled to Southern Vance Thursday and came away with a 5-0 win. Erin Fortier scored the first goal on a rebound. Libby Gaskins scored next, followed by Katie Smith netting a goal from 10 yards out on an assist from Anne Tucker-Rogers.

Rogers nailed another goal from 15 yards out on a Leslie Stallings assist and Smith scored the final goal on a Fortier pass.

Coach Terry Frazier praised the defensive play of Anna Mahone and Ashley Nowell. Becky Byrum and Kaylin White combined for the shutout in goal.
