ROANOKE RAPIDS -- The boys' basketball State Games kicked off at 6 p.m., Friday, in the U14 bracket with the Roanoke Rapids Raptors hosting the Red Oak Blazers at T.J. Davis Recreation Center.
The Blazers came out pressuring the Raptors guards and were able to create numerous early turnovers as they jumped out to a 12-4 lead.
Roanoke Rapids was able to cut the deficit to five at the end of the first quarter with some frantic defense that had Red Oak out of sync.
Despite the presence of big men Harold Willoughby for the home team and Mitchell Wells for the visitors, both teams focused primarily on guard play.
Javonte Payton led Red Oak to a 29-20 first-half lead with nine points.
The rangy guard used quick drives to the basket along with showing his outside range.
Roanoke Rapids fell behind 35-22 to start the second half before finally feeding Willoughby in the post.
The big man responded with seven points as the Raptors went on a 10-0 run to cut their deficit to five.
It would be the closest they came, however, as Payton simply took over for the Blazers, scoring 23 second-half points and propelling his team into the second round.
Payton led all scorers with 32 points, while Robin Moore Jr. paced Roanoke Rapids with 12.

ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Relying on steady defensive pressure and the explosive offense of guard Tay Scott, Southeast Halifax slipped by Flambeau 49-46 in the opening game of the U18 State Games Friday.
Flambeau, a team made up of talented players from high schools throughout the Roanoke Valley, got off to a fast start and opened up a nine-point lead in the first quarter of the game.
At the 1:50 mark, the Southeast Halifax zone tightened to prevent the inside pass and Brinkley stepped back and nailed a three-pointer from the right perimeter.
Fortunately for Southeast Halifax, one quarter doesn't make a tournament.
Southeast Halifax finally found success driving to the basket in the second eight minutes and more importantly, their attacking zone defense started to work.
The offense seemed to feed off the defense's outstanding play and as the first half ended, Edward Alston converted a free throw to tie the score at 26.
For most of the second half, neither team could gain more than a two-point advantage. Then with less than two minutes remaining, Tay Scott caught fire. The Southeast Halifax guard sank two of his three treys, pushing his team ahead by eight points.
Brinkley scored a desperation three and Stalling buried a final layup off an offensive rebound, but time ran out on Flambeau.
Scott led all scorers with 14 points and Elton Williams chipped in nine for Southeast. Quinton Turner and Boone scored nine apiece for Flambeau.

ROANOKE RAPIDS - In the U16 semifinals, the Rough Riders gave the Tar River Raptors all they could handle for four quarters - and then some.
The Raptors needed two overtimes, and some questionable calls from the officials, to defeat the Weldon-based team 84-78. It appeared the Raptors had the game wrapped up in regulation, but Demond Faulcon came up with some clutch baskets down the stretch and added timely free throws to send the game into the first overtime.
In the extra period, the Raptors again jumped out to a lead before the Rough Riders fought back. After Raptors forward Michael Speight fouled out, the team had no answer inside for Rough Riders forward Eric Jones. Jones scored on a three-point play to tie the game.
The Raptors retook the lead on a bucket by Trey Sammler, but D'Antrey Person kept the Rough Riders in the contest with a LeBron-like performance in the closing moments.
With six seconds left on the clock, the Raptors had a two-point lead and the Rough Riders had to take the ball out under the opposite basket. With little time and 94 feet to go, Person found Jones streaking down the middle of the court, and hit the big man in stride for an easy layup, sending the game into a second overtime.
The Rough Riders came within one, 73-72, but that would be as close as the team would get. Person lead the Rough Riders with 31 points in the defeat.

ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Southeast Halifax was unable to continue the unyielding defense they played Friday evening against Flambeau, losing to the Washington County All Stars 80-74 in the second round U18 States Games.
Southeast opened the game with the same swarming zone defense they played so effectively the previous evening and took an early 11-0 lead.
Washington County switched to a full-court press at the five-minute mark and was immediately successful. Not only did the pressure defense halt what was becoming a Southeast rout, it seemed to restore the offensive confidence of the Wildcats.
The All Stars chipped away at a 10-point Southeast lead until a Kendrick Norman technical foul for hanging on the basket reversed the momentum.
Elton Williams and Edward Alston shouldered the load as Southeast regained the initiative and finished the first quarter leading by six points.
Southeast held on to the lead for the next two quarters, beating back every Washington County surge.
With 16 seconds left in the third quarter, Norman, the Washington County center, primary rebounder and shot blocker fouled out. The situation looked bleak for the All Stars, but the Washington County team never lost its poise.
With 5:15 remaining in the game, the Plymouth team took its first lead, 66-65, after two Robert Mckay free throws. Then a technical foul on the Southeast Halifax bench robbed the southeast team of energy and sealed their fate.
It didn't help that Southeast turned the ball over nine times in its last 12 possessions either.
Elton Williams of Southeast led all scorers with 29 points in the losing effort. Jason Kornegay had 18 for Washington County.

ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Playing in their third game of the day, the Flambeau U18 team came up short, falling to Washington County 78-69 in the U18 championship game at Roanoke Rapids High School.
Taking advantage of having fresh legs, Washington County applied a full-court press to start the game and jumped out to an 11-6 lead after a three-point play from Jason Korneqay.
Flambeau took its first lead of the contest on a free throw from Terrell Stallings, and led 35-33 at the break.
Washington County went back to the press in the third quarter with continuing success. The two teams exchanged leads throughout the frame, but the Washington County squad took control of the game for good early in the fourth.
Adrian Webb nailed a three-pointer, then picked off a pass and converted it into a three-point play to push the lead to seven, 65-58.
After a Flambeau bucket by Quinton Turner, Webb came back with another steal and an assist to put Washington County ahead by nine.
The locals wouldn't recover from the deficit and Angelo Sharpen put the exclamation point on the game with a slam dunk.
Korneqay led all scorers with 27 points. Turner lead Flambeau with 15.
