JACKSON - More than $40,000 worth of marijuana plants were located Monday when the Northampton County Sheriff's Office collaborated with the National Guard to conduct a countywide drug eradication.

According to Capt. George Reed, the plants were located at four different locations, and the eradication was a “great success.”

Rafal Perez Benite, 25, of Fern Lane in Gaston, was allegedly watering his marijuana in the woods when he saw the National Guard helicopter fly overhead. Benite allegedly secured five plants, ran deeper into the forest to hide them and attempted to drive out while law enforcement was still at the entrance to the path. With the assistance of K-9 handler Dep. B. White and his K-9 Bliss, the sheriff's office was able to locate the marijuana Benite had hidden in the woods.

Benite was arrested and detained in the Northampton County jail under $10,000 bond for manufacturing marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. The department also seized his vehicle. His first court appearance is today.
