Carla Hutcherson's life revolves around serving others.

Whether it is through her primary job as Alzheimer's director for Magnolia Gardens, teaching CPR and team communications or serving tea at the business she co-owns, Hutcherson said serving has always been in her nature.

She has worked for Magnolia Gardens for 14 years. “It's a very emotional job. You have to have the patience of a saint.”

It is being co-owner of Timeless Tea that serves as a stress reliever from the rigors of her other jobs. The teahouse started from a simple tea party she had at her house.

“It went so well everyone wanted to do it on a regular basis.”

She is also an intermediate EMT with Gaston Rescue, something she has done for the past five years. She also teaches CPR and EMS courses part-time at Halifax Community College and has taught team communications for the past five to six years to businesses.

She got into EMS out of frustration with the EMS crews who would come to Magnolia Gardens. “The EMS crews who came there were so rude and impatient. I thought it couldn't be that hard.”

In what little spare time she has, Hutcherson is a 1930s and 1940s nostalgia buff, collecting memorabilia and watching movies from that period. One of her favorite movies is “It's a Wonderful Life.”

The movie, she said, is a reality check and shows people what life would be like without them. “It would be amazing if you could go through that.”

She also enjoys spending time with “loving husband and best friend of 16 years,” Sean. She has two children and two grandchildren.
