Liverman named to council post

ROANOKE RAPIDS - Ed Liverman, a self-described non-politician, was the unanimous choice Friday to fill the vacancy left by the Feb. 12 resignation of councilman Reggie Baird.

“It's an honor to accept that appointment,” Liverman said, adding he looks forward to serving the citizens of Roanoke Rapids, meeting not only for their immediate needs, but their future needs as well.

Liverman considers himself an ordinary person determined to represent a large portion of the city. “I look to be one guy trying to help.”

He owns Twin Rivers Company, which he started after graduating from N.C. State University in 1992. A lifelong resident of Roanoke Rapids, Liverman and his wife, Julie Bennett Liverman, have two children, ages 3 and 5.

Councilman Jon Baker made the motion to appoint Liverman. “From what I know about Ed Liverman, he's an ardent supporter of the community and I think he'll be a good addition to council,” he said following Friday's meeting.

Liverman was one of four applicants. The other three were Jack Moore, a retired environmental health supervisor, Keith Oliver, an insurance agent, and Charles Smith, a business owner.

Baird resigned from council after the city revoked the letter of intent it had with UGL Unicco to manage The Roanoke Rapids Theatre.
