In the second round of the NCHSAA 2A playoffs, Durham School of the Arts got the best of the Yellow Jackets, coming away with a 3-1 victory at Hoyle Field. In round three another Frazier, Northwood head coach Russ, will get a shot at the Bulldogs, but on Saturday Russ's dad Terry couldn't get pass DSA.
For a game that was pretty evenly matched in the first half, Roanoke Rapids couldn't come up with a goal in the second half and caught some pretty tough breaks.
“The whole game we never got ourselves in rhythm,” Terry Frazier said. “We never strung together passes like we had all year.”
The Yellow Jackets have been off for 10 days since they received a first round bye, while the Bulldogs had a game under their belts this week. DSA showed they were ready to play by scoring the first goal of the game a little under the 30 minute mark.
Brenna Hannapel lined up a kick from the left of the goal from about 15 yards out, and arched the ball over the outstretched hands of Roanoke Rapids goalie Becky Byrum to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets narrowly escaped going down two when Mei Kuei Bohannan's shot just missed by hitting the top of the goal post. Roanoke Rapids got back in the contest when sophomore Katie Smith used some nifty moves to get free and put one in from the left side of the formation to tie the game at one.
From that point on that's when the ball took some funny bounces for the Lady Jackets.
After Bohannan missed a shot from inside the box Roanoke Rapids defender Libby Gaskins accidentally deflected the ball pass Byrum and right into the net, putting the Bulldogs up 2-1. DSA had a one-point lead at half-time without even have to score the go ahead goal.
In the second half the Yellow Jackets had a chance to tie when a penalty was called against the Bulldogs. Frazier called on Northern Carolina Conference Player of the Year Anne Tucker Rodgers to take the penalty kick and the Roanoke Rapids faithful could all put assure that the game would tied at two shortly.
But Rodgers wasn't able to convert as DSA goalie Aarin Miles made the stop.
Miles, who had bobbled some balls in the first half, stepped up and made the stops when they counted in the second half. Three times in the final 40 minutes the sophomore came up with big saves for the Bulldogs, including one stop with her feet off a shot from Alisya Bradley.
DSA added one more at the 11:25 mark for the final score of the night. A Bulldogs' player missed a shot that bounced off the top of the goal right into the path of Emma Sell-Goodhand who quickly fired a shot through the net before Byrum could recover.
It was that kind of night for the NCC champs.
“The ball got in the goal some kind of strange ways tonight,” Frazier said. “It's not like somebody blast the ball past us. Funny bounces, a lot of things could have happen ... it could have happen our way. But we had our opportunities. A lot things could have turn the game around. It just wasn't out night.”
