ROANOKE RAPIDS - The Uptown Friday Nights gala returns to Roanoke Avenue Friday with the community celebration planned from 6 to 11 p.m.

The 900 and 1000 blocks of Roanoke Avenue will be closed for the event. Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Jeff Hinton said detours for truck traffic will be set up at 14th street and the Avenue and the Washington Street extension and the Avenue to route that traffic onto Hamilton Street.

According to a resolution passed by City Council Tuesday night, the state Department of Transportation has given its approval to close that portion of the street for the Roanoke Avenue Merchants and Professional Association to hold the event.

Additionally, the city resolution will allow gala-goers to purchase malt beverages and unfortified wine from inside restaurants in the closed portion of the Avenue and carry their beverages to tables on the sidewalk.

This Friday's celebration will include an Elvis contest - who looks and sings like the King. You can sign up for the event at Java Junction. Additionally, there will be a duck pull and a beanbag toss for children.

Fridays in the Park will once again coincide with Uptown Friday Nights and will feature jazz music by Elect Image Band.
