ROANOKE RAPIIDS - Roanoke Rapids and Tarboro split games in non-conference volleyball action here Wednesday afternoon.

In the varsity game, the host Yellow Jackets sprinted out of the gate and whipped the Vikings 25-10 in game one. Successive kills by Britteny Hux and Jordan Poythress and a serving ace from Hux gave the Jackets a 19-10 lead. Hux served the last five points en route to the game victory.

Tarboro rebounded to win the second game 25-19, then added game three by a 25-18 margin. The Vikings' experience against a young Jacket squad showed in the final game. Tarboro was more consistent in their sets and better on the touch shots. That added up to a 25-13 win in the deciding game.

The loss left the Jackets at 0-3. The Jackets' youth was evidenced as they used four players from their JV team in the varsity game.

Roanoke Rapids won the JV game 2-1 in sets. With Cameron Shoe serving, the Jackets raced to a 4-1 lead in the opening game. Kallie Arthur served out the game, winning six points on serve to give Roanoke Rapids a 25-17 win.

The visitors rebounded to edge the Jackets in the second game, 25-23.

But the host Jackets came back to take the final game 25-18. A pair of serves, the second an ace by Taylor Branham, gave the Jackets a 22-17 lead. Arthur then served the last two points to give Roanoke Rapids the victory.

Coach Carlene Goodwin called the win “a good win with good team play. I was very satisfied with the effort and the result, “ she added.
