WELDON - A Weldon woman is in critical condition following a domestic shooting Sunday morning, according to the Weldon Police Department. Her alleged assailant is behind bars.

Chief Mark Macon said 29-year-old Jermaine Anderson turned himself in around noon Sunday and is being held in jail without bond on a charge of attempted murder. He surrendered at the magistrate's office in Halifax.

The shooting occurred just after 2:45 a.m. on Willow Drive. Anderson and his girlfriend, Stephanie Willis, 33, were arguing and fighting just before she was shot three times in the upper part of the body, Macon said.

It is not clear what the argument was about. Macon said the argument and fight occurred outside and inside the residence. Willis was shot inside the house.

Following the shooting Anderson took his 2-year-old child from the scene. Police put out an Amber Alert for the child and three hours later received a call from his grandparents saying the child was safe with them at their house on Sycamore Street. Authorities also found the vehicle Anderson was driving behind the house.

It is not clear where Anderson spent his time following the shooting. The weapon was apparently a handgun kept inside Willis' house.

Willis was airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital.
