ROANOKE RAPIDS — The long-awaited proposal from Chicago businessman Lafayette Gatling to buy the Roanoke Rapids Theatre was received Wednesday, City Manager Phyllis Lee confirmed.

It has not yet been made a public document, Lee said this morning. Gatling’s proposal and several others received will be reviewed when the Theatre Advisory Committee meets in closed session at 5:15 p.m., today.

The meeting will be held in the downstairs conference room of city hall at 1040 Roanoke Ave.

Although proposals will be accepted through Oct. 14, Mayor Drewery Beale said this morning he hopes the city can begin to speed up review of the documents.

The mayor said he wants to hold public hearings on the proposals as soon as the committee and City Council have reviewed them.

Beale also said once the reviews are completed all the documents will be placed in booklet form and be on display for public inspection.

Council will have a closed session Oct. 14 meeting to go over the proposals, he said. “We’re just trying to move the project along and get the theater back open,” the mayor said. “I hope they (the committee) will go ahead and give us some type of guidance so we can go ahead and move forward.”
