Our view: Duking it out on all levels

The political season keeps getting uglier and uglier. And it isn’t just on the national level where innuendo and near lies are plentiful in political advertising.

The candidates for North Carolina governor and one of the state’s U.S. Senate seats are up to their necks in mud and its still rising.

It’s a shame. The voters deserve better.

A difference of opinion over policies or future plans is to be expected in political discourse but trying to confuse the vote with blue smoke and mirrors is inexcusable.

The Daily Herald is working on candidate profiles of the major candidates — state and local.

We would appreciate our readers’ thoughts and questions. If you have a specific request or idea, please give Managing Editor John Moeur a call at (252) 537-2505 Ext. 233, after 11 a.m.

Meanwhile, we encourage you to follow our coverage of the election in the Daily Herald and to watch the televised debates. This Thursday’s debate between the Democratic and Republican candidates for vice president is a prime example of overhype and ignoring the issues by both the politicians and the media.

The debate isn’t over who has the best policies for the nation but instead as to who can set the lowest expectation of performance so their candidate can look the best. And the national media has fallen into this trap. It’s a shame — we believe when you expect mediocrity, that’s what you get and deserve.
