William R. Davie and Enfield Middle School could have played their football game on a 50 yard field Wednesday afternoon. The Cougars hardly ever punted and never crossed midfield, all the while giving the Vikings good field position on every drive. The result was a 34-0 victory for William R. Davie. With the win the Vikings improve to 2-1 on the year while Enfield falls to 1-2.

After the Vikings ran out of bullets and stopped shooting themselves in the foot in the opening eight minutes of play, they starting putting some points on the board. On the first play of the second quarter Davie running back Keith Williams plunged in from 1 yard out for the first score of the day. The conversion attempt failed and the Vikings led 6-0 with 7:55 remaining in the first half. The touchdown was set up by a nice defensive stand by the Davie defense. The Cougars went for it on fourth down deep inside their own territory and needless to say, they came up short.

On the next Enfield drive they quickly went three and out and attempted their first punt of the game. The snap was dropped and the Vikings recovered the ball on the 17-yard line. Davie running back William Yancey advanced the ball to the 1-yard line with a nice run and two plays later Vontrell Johnson punched it in to put the home team up 12-0.

Again the Vikings capitalized on Enfield’s inability to convert on fourth down. This time Davie went to the air and quarterback Jackie Caudle found Dameyl Sledge for a 20-yard score. The conversion failed but the Vikings led the Cougars 18-0 at intermission.

Enfield received the ball to start the third quarter and the Davie defense came out with bad intentions in the second half. The Cougars were backed up inside the 10-yard line and kept going backwards. Eventually they went too far back and the Cougars quarterback found himself in his own endzone. The ball come loose and Vikings defender Keyon West pounced on the pigskin for the Davie touchdown. Caudle added the conversion and the Vikings led 26-0

Davie had another crack at the endzone on the next possession but lost a fumble on the seven yard line. The Cougars couldn’t convert and the Vikings tacked one more on for good measure when Keith Porch trotted in from 15-yards out on a sweep. Caudle added the conversion run for the final margin of victory.

Next week, William R. Davie hosts Weldon while Enfield will return to Roanoke Rapids to take on Chaloner Middle.
