He was born Jan. 29, 1944, in Halifax County, the son of the late Robert and Callie Boyd Stewart. After receiving his formal education in the Halifax County Public School System, he relocated to Newport News, Va., to obtain gainful employment. Upon returning to Roanoke Rapids, Ernest began a long and successful career in logging. He later became founder and owner of Boyd’s Logging Company.

On Sept. 16, 1967, he was united in holy matrimony to the former Georgia P. Jones. He was a loving husband and a dedicated father of three children, always placing the needs of his family first.

Later in life, Ernest professed faith in Christ and began his spiritual walk at St. Matthew Baptist Church in Roanoke Rapids,  where he remained a member until his demise.

In addition to his parents, Ernest was preceded in death by two brothers, Waverly Lewis and James Boyd; one uncle, William Boyd Jr.; and four aunts, Iona Harris, Mable “Dot” Yellorday, Ella Dean Boyd and “Mama” Bertha Boyd Fleming.

Ernest will be forever remembered for his gentle, caring nature and unselfish generosity to his family, friends and community.

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife, Georgia of the home; his children, Gayla of Roanoke Rapids, Iris (Dennis) Pierce of Nashville, N.C., and Renee (Michael) Williams of Battleboro; his grandchildren, Akilah Edmonds of Raleigh, Jamila Boyd of Cary, Darrien “Petie” Pierce of Nashville and Jahlia and Mykal “MJ” Williams, both of Battleboro; three brothers-in- law, Marvin Jones of Enfield, Jimmy (Donna) Jones of Roanoke Rapids and Bobby Jones of Taylorsville; four sisters-in-law, Ruth B.
