Fall and Christmas craft fair

The Adventurers of Lake Gaston Baptist Church will hold a fall and Christmas craft fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Church Family Life Center.  All booths for the fair are full with some crafters coming from as far away as Greenville.

E.V. Rally set for Nov. 7-8

The 12th annual Electric Vehicle Rally will be held Nov. 7-8, at Northampton County High School-East. There will a circuit event, autocross, trouble-shooting, pit crew competition and a range event. The event will take palce off of Highway 158 in Old Tavern, N.C. 750 NCHS-East Road, Conway NC 27820. Song Writers Contest

The Dream Acres Music Festival will hold a singer/songwriter competition. Each applicant will have the chance to be chosen as one of five artists selected to compete and play on stage at the festival.

The winner will receive a prize package from D’Addario Strings Company as well as the opportunity to have an entire CD of their music digitally produced, compliments of Twilight Productions. The winner will also be invited to come back to the following festival to perform on the main stage.

 Each song must be entered separately on a CD with the $15 entry fee. The competition will take place the morning of the Saturday festival. The winner will be announced on the main stage that evening.

Reservations being taken

The Kirkwood F. Adams Community Center will begin taking bookings for the month of June, 2009 at 9 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the Jo Story Senior Center, 701 Jackson St., Roanoke Rapids. Bookings are taken for the available dates on a first-come, first-served basis. When there are several people waiting to book the center, the first person in line will be taken first. A $50 non-refundable deposit is due at booking.

VFW happenings for October

VFW turkey shoot, sponsored by the Ladies Auxiliary, will be held from 6 to 10 p.m., on Friday nights, through Nov. 28. Bring guns and have some fun.

Alzheimer’s Support Group to meet

Partnership for Children

The board of directors of the Northampton Partnership for Children Inc. will hold its board meeting at 8:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 17, in the new location at 8380 Highway 305, the former  Jackson Eastside Elementary School. All board members are expected to attend. Meetings are open to the public and Northampton County parents of children up to age 5 are also encouraged to attend.

Turkey shoots to begin

Horse show

The Halifax County Horse and Livestock Council will sponsor a Tri-County Horse Show at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Horse Livestock Complex, located between Interstate 95 on Highway 903. Entry fees are $6 per class. The show is free to spectators and a concession will be available. In case of rain, the show will be rescheduled at 9:30 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 12. Trip to Christmas show

The Faison Senior Center will sponsor a fun day trip to the Carolina Premium Outlets to the matinee at the American Music Jubilee Christmas Show on Thursday, Nov. 20. Basket making retreat is Oct. 24-26

The Scotland Neck Business Association will sponsor a basket making retreat Oct. 24-26. Handmade North Carolina Baskets instructor Joni-Dee Ross will teach quarterly at the senior center on Main Street in Scotland Neck until the future art center becomes a reality. Crafters will begin the classes and progress to Nantucket Baskets at the intermediate level. Ross is one of the few instructors in the nation who teaches the craft of making Nantucket Baskets. The first retreat will allow crafters to make basic baskets or make a special request with the instructor to bring more advanced basket kits. Students may take one, two or three days and take home their completed basket the same day. Nantucket Baskets will be taught by the third retreat as students progress.

Basket kits are approximately $25 to $30 each, depending on size. Several baskets have been selected for the first retreat including knitting basket, casserole basket, soap bottle holder and work basket.

Christmas show at Myrtle Beach

There will be a three-day trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., Dec. 2-4, to awaken your spirit and start shopping for Christmas. Northampton County High School-East Class of 1974 is making plans to have a class reunion. Flu clinic

The Halifax County Health Department will sponsor a flu clinic from 1 to 3 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Jo Story Senior Center. Remember to bring Medicare or Medicaid cards. With Medicare or Medicaid, the fee is $32 for the flu shot and $48 for the pneumonia shot.

Fundraiser for Belmont

Belmont Elementary will hold a fundraiser from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9, at Andy’s Cheesesteaks. All proceeds during these hours will go to Belmont.

Halloween youth dance

The Gasburg Volunteer  Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary will host its annual Halloween youth dance from 7 to 10 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24. All ages are welcome (6 and under must have adult supervision). Admission is $5 each and tickets will be available at the door.

Candidates forum

 The Halifax County Black Caucus (HCBC) will host its third candidates forum at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9, at Weldon Middle School, Highway 301, Halifax.

According to Marilyn Harris, HCBC Chairperson, “Get Out the Vote/Education Sessions” are being sponsored, as the Caucus and other organizations host local election forums across the county. Wellness Festival

Northampton County residents will hold its first annual Northampton Wellness Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Northampton County Cultural and Wellness Center in Jackson. Participants can attend health screenings, see health exhibits, get flu shots, listen to educational sessions, sample healthy foods and win door prizes. The event is sponsored by the Northampton Office on Aging, Northampton County Health Department, J. W. Faison Senior Center, N.C. Cooperative Extension and Northampton Healthy Carolinians. Dawson Elementary fall festival

Dawson Elementary School will hold its annual fall festival from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7. Genealogical Society to meet

The Halifax County Genealogical Society will meet at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, in the Halifax County Library’s boardroom. The Five County Mental Health Authority’s Consumer and Family Advisory Committee meets monthly to assist in developing and revising the mental health plan that drives mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services for the five county area. Garysburg Youth Center

The Garysburg Youth Center, on Highway 186 in Garysburg, is now open to school-aged children in Northampton County for $5 per month. The hours of operation are 3:15 to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Applications are still being accepted.

Bethel School of the Bible

Bethel School of the Bible is in its third year in the Roanoke Valley holding forth the principles of truth, another year of successful Biblical studies. Women’s prayer meeting

The Roanoke Valley Women’s Prayer Squad will meet at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 6, at Rosemary Baptist Church, 936 Jackson St., Roanoke Rapids. The prayer meetings are held four times a year at different churches throughout the Roanoke Valley. NCHS-West PTA is Oct. 7

Northampton County High School-West will hold its first PTA meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 7, in the school cafeteria. All parents are encouraged to come and meet the new principal. New information for the upcoming year will be presented and there will be free hotdogs, chips and drinks for the parents and students. There will also be drawings for door prizes for PTA members.

AMVETS to hold meal

AMVETS Post 101, 1710 West Tenth St., Roanoke Rapids, will hold its bi-weekly meal from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 8. The menu will feature homemade chicken and dumplings, butter beans, corn and a roll for $6 per plate. Eat in or take out.

Roanoke Wildwood VFD yard sale

The Roanoke Wildwood Volunteer Fire Department has been collecting donations and will hold a large yard sale at 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, at the main station located at 790 Lizard Creek Road, across from the Wildwood nursery and Garden Center. It is important the fire department know about the delivery of donations to ensure the items are in working order and to properly store items out of the weather.

Donate used cell phones and inkjet cartridges

Please donate used cell phones and inkjet cartridges to help raise much needed funds for the Roanoke Rapids High School prom. RRHS is collecting used cell phones and inkjet cartridges through March 15 for the purpose of prom. This organization will receive money from Phoneraiser for each item collected during this fundraiser. Phoneraiser is a company that specializes in recycling and refurbishing used technology. Donations will help protect the environment and unwanted cell phones and inkjet cartridges will be recycled in accordance with EPA regulations or refurbished and reused. Phoneraiser makes unneeded technology available to those who can use it, while keeping it out of the landfill. If improperly disposed of, the cell phone can pollute up to 132,000 liters of drinking water. Donations may be tax deductible. All cell phones and inkjet cartridges are accepted and can be donated at the Roanoke Rapids High School Office, 800 Hamilton St.

Seeking crafters

The Conway Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor its 17th annual “Ho, Ho! Ho! Christmas Craft Show” from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 29, at Conway Middle School. Plans for the show includes lots of crafts, food and fun.

Homecoming a NCHS-West

Northampton County High School-West will observe its annual homecoming during the week of October 7-10. The Coronation will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9, in the auditorium. Parents of the homecoming court participants are encouraged to attend. The football game against Gates County High will follow at 7:30 p.m., Friday night.

Weldon community celebration

The Weldon community celebration will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9, at Historic Weldon Waterfront, River Falls Park. Come celebrate Weldon’s selection as a N.C. small town economic prosperity demonstration community and also learn how to participate in the future growth and development of the town of Weldon.

The Northampton County Board of Health will meet at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9, in the Northampton County Health Department Conference Room, 9495 N.C. 305 Highway, Jackson.

Eatons Ferry AARP

Eatons Ferry Road Chapter of AARP will host its regular monthly meeting at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Littleton Community Center.

Social time will begin at 6 p.m., followed by a pot luck dinner at 6:30 p.m., a program and a business meeting. The program will feature The Gastonettes.

All members, guests and potential members are welcome to attend. Members are asked to bring a dish or a dessert to share.

Storytime at the library is Oct. 11

The Roanoke Rapids Public Library will have a Saturday Storytime program at 10:30 a.m., Saturday. Oct. 11, in the conference room. There will be stories, songs and crafts for children ages 2 through 5.

Plate sale

The male ministry of Smith Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Enfield will hold a plate sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, at Lowe’s Grocery Parking lot in Enfield. They will serve chicken, fish, string beans, coleslaw, potatos, rolls and dessert. Prices range from $6 to $7. All donations will go toward the church building fund.

A Fun Day at the Park will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 18, at Rocky Mount Sports. There will be fun activities for all, including fishing, volleyball, basketball, and  much more. All are welcome.For information on either of these events, contact Joel Hunter at (252) 445-0414.

Northwest Halifax High School PTSA

The Northwest Halifax High School PTSA meeting will be held at 6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 13, in the cafeteria. The Cultural Arts Department will provide entertainment. A student incentive of 100 points will be given to students who are accompanied by their parent or guardian. All students, parents and guardians are encouraged to attend and join the PTSA.

E.V. Rally set for Nov. 7-8

The 12th annual Electric Vehicle Rally will be held Nov. 7-8, at Northampton County High School-East. There will a circuit event, autocross, trouble-shooting, pit crew competition and a range event. African-American Festival

The 11th annual African-American Festival wil be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, at Hertford County Middle School in Murfreesboro. The N.C. Song Writers Contest

The Dream Acres Music Festival will hold a singer/songwriter competition. Each applicant will have the chance to be chosen as one of five artists selected to compete and play on stage at the festival.

The winner will receive a prize package from D’Addario Strings Company as well as the opportunity to have an entire CD of their music digitally produced, compliments of Twilight Productions. The winner will also be invited to come back to the following festival to perform on the main stage.

 Operation Christmas Stocking

The State Employee’s Credit Union District 34 will hold its fourth year of Operation Christmas Stocking, Support Our Troops. Help make this the best Christmas Holiday ever for our deployed men and women serving overseas by stuffing a Christmas stocking to send to them. Boatsie’s Boxes is a nonprofit, 501(c)3, charitable organization dedicated to supporting troops when they are far from home. Adventurers schedule meeting for Nov. 15

Roanoke Rapids Library to be closed Oct. 13

The Roanoke Rapids Public Library will be closed on Monday, Oct. 13, for a staff development day.  The library will reopen on Oct. 14 with regular hours of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to  6 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Fall special programs at T.J. Davis

Fall special programs at T.J. Davis Recreation Center include:

Self defense — Learn how to defend yourself against the physical dangers in today’s world. Classes will be held from 7 to 8 p.m., on Tuesdays; instructor, Ricky Jordan.

Aerobics — Low moderate impact, from 6 to 7 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday.

These classes will be $10 for residents and $20 for non-residents.

Also, a walking program for non-residents, where participants may use the indoor walking track costs $10 for non-residents for two months of access.

Halloween Spooktacular 2008 will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31. Free carnival; the haunted house costs extra. The carnival is for ages 12 and under and the haunted house is not for young children. Wear your best costume and bring a treat bag to gather goodies.

Upcoming trips sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Senior Citizens Association

The Roanoke Valley Senior Citizens Association will sponsor the following trips:

Thursday, Oct. 9, Sylvan Heights, cost is $12. The bus will leave the Jo Story Senior Center at 10:45 a.m., and will stop for lunch, which is not included in the price. The tour is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the deadline is Oct. 1.

Tuesday, Oct. 18, North Carolina State Fair, cost is $23. This is just the cost of transportation. The bus will leave at 8 a.m. from the Jo Story Senior Center and will leave the fairgrounds at 5 p.m. for the return trip home, and the deadline is Oct. 10.

Thursday, Nov. 13, Rocky Hock Playhouse will present “Star Over Bethlehem.” The cost for the trip is $42, which includes transportation, lunch and the play; deadline is Oct. 15.

Monday, Dec. 8, Christmas show at American Music Jubilee in Selma, and the deadline is Nov. 14.

Fall and Christmas craft fair

The Adventurers of Lake Gaston Baptist Church will hold a fall and Christmas craft fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 15, at the Church Family Life Center.  All booths for the fair are full with some crafters coming from as far away as Greenville.

Northampton County residents who are low or fixed income may qualify to receive food given out at the Big Heart Pantry located at Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 1408 River Road, Henrico. Eligibility is determined on income or emergency need. For assistance, applicants may apply from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturdays, at Cedar Grove.

 

Basket making retreat is Oct. 24-26

The Scotland Neck Business Association will sponsor a basket making retreat Oct. 24-26. Handmade North Carolina Baskets instructor Joni-Dee Ross will teach quarterly at the senior center on Main Street in Scotland Neck until the future art center becomes a reality. Crafters will begin the classes and progress to Nantucket Baskets at the intermediate level. Ross is one of the few instructors in the nation who teaches the craft of making Nantucket Baskets. The first retreat will allow crafters to make basic baskets or make a special request with the instructor to bring more advanced basket kits. Students may take one, two or three days and take home their completed basket the same day. Nantucket Baskets will be taught by the third retreat as students progress.

Trip to Charleston

A chartered bus trip with the Sunshine Travel Club to Charleston, S.C., is planned for Dec. 5-7. The trip will include a tour of one of America’s oldest working living plantations, tour of Charleston, dinner and cruise on the Spirit of Carolina. The group will stay in the heart of the Historic District in Charleston, within walking distance of the famous open market. There will be much more to see and do. Community Arts Day

Community Arts Day will be held from 2 to 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Cultural and Wellness Center in Jackson.

The Northampton County Cultural Arts Committee will  sponsor artist Bryant Holsenbeck for a week-long residency with the community. To celebrate her visit, the community arts day will include unveiling a piece(s) of art created by community members for display at the Cultural and Wellness Center; an art contest for middle and high school students;    displaying of local artists’ work; and musical entertainment.

Holsenbeck has been collecting “stuff” and transforming it into art for more than a decade. “Americans create more garbage than any other culture.” She wants people to think, when they view her art, about the “stuff” we use and throw away. Trip to Atlantic City planned for Nov. 1

The Concerned Citizens of Northampton County will sponsor a bus trip to Atlantic City on Nov. 1. The boarding time will be at 5 a.m., at the new Wal-Mart parking lot in Roanoke Rapids. The bus will leave at 6 a.m. There will also be a second boarding place at Food Lion Parking Lot in Emporia, Va., at 6:20 a.m. The cost is $60, with a $25 deposit due by Oct. 3. Final payment will be needed by Oct. 24. The bus will arrive at approximately 3 p.m. and will leave Atlantic City at 11 p.m., Nov. 1. Hobgood Clinic The Hobgood Clinic, a free diabetes testing and education center run by medical students at East Carolina University, meets at 8:30 a.m., the first and second Saturday of every month, at the Thomas Shields Community Center in Hobgood. Lifeguard training

The Roanoke Rapids Aquatic Center will offer an American Red Cross lifeguard training class in October. Participants must be 15 years of age or older and they must be able to pass a pre-test before entering into the class, which can be arranged by appointment.   Littleton Woman’s Club holding shoe drive

The Littleton Woman’s Club is conducting a shoe drive. A local victim of Cerebral Palsy is in need of athletic shoes. Because of the disability, he wears a pair out every three to four weeks. Fall for the Arts 2008 will be presented by O’Sail from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 25. The concept will be a multi-location artists’ reception around Lake Gaston; roughly six locations hosting multiple artists and their art at each location; participating artists will be juried; and work will be on display and for sale. Each location will have complementary food and drink throughout the day, live music, hostesses and parking support and complementary artist’s gifts. Tickets are $30 per person; 100 tickets maximum.

Library changes hours

The Roanoke Rapids Public Library has changed its hours and will observe the following schedule: The library will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday; from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday; and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., on Saturday.   

The library is located at 319 Roanoke Ave. and offers resources and information services for educational, recreational and cultural growth to the citizens of Roanoke Rapids and the surrounding region. For more information, call (252) 533-2890.

Harvest Days applications

The annual Halifax County Harvest Days Festival, presented by the Halifax County Cooperative Extension, will be held Oct. 17-18, at the 4-H Rural Life Center on Highway 903 in Halifax.

Applications for food and craft vendors are available by calling (252) 583-5161. Commercial food vendor spaces cost $100 and a certificate of insurance for liability and worker’s compensation must be provided. Non-profit food vendor spaces are free of charge, but vendors are asked to show a 501(c)(3) form for tax exemption and a certificate of insurance if carried. Craft vendor spaces are $50, but crafters who demonstrate and discuss their craft are free of charge. The deadline for reserving a vendor space is Oct. 3.

Halifax County agricultural fair

American Legion Shaw-May Post No. 38 will host the 52nd annual Halifax-Northampton County Agriculture Fair, which will be bigger and better than ever, with the new dates of Oct. 21- 25. There will be a new attraction — a petting zoo. Also, new competition classes including stained glass, egg art and leather work, along with the old favorites of canning, quilting, ceramics, flowers, etc.

Now is the time to plant a vegetable, perfect your favorite cake recipe, sew a garment, make a craft or take a photograph. Plan to enter your work, then come out and see the exhibits, enjoy the fun, food and rides.

 Christmas shopping show trip to Charlotte

There will be a chartered bus trip with the Christian bus line Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14-15, to travel to Charlotte for the Southern Christmas Shopping Show at the Charlotte Merchandise Mart with more than 500 vendors.

This trip also includes an evening dinner cruise for approximately  2-1/2 hours around Lake Norman, a Saturday morning breakfast buffet, a visit to the Billy Graham Library, a three hour trip to the Concord Mill Outlet Mall, and then departure for home. Adventurers to have craft show

The Adventurers of Lake Gaston Baptist Church are accepting applications from the community and surrounding area for its Nov. 15 craft and hobby show. Day trip to Christmas Home Tour planned

The Adventurers of Lake Gaston are planning a day trip Friday, Dec.12, to the Christmas Home Tour at Edenton. Cost of the trip is $58, which includes a luxury motor coach, tickets to the Home Tour, lunch at Golden Coral and tip for the bus driver.
