Genealogical Society to meet

The Halifax County Genealogical Society will meet at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, in the Halifax County Library’s boardroom. Five County Mental Health to meet Oct. 14

The Five County Mental Health Authority’s Consumer and Family Advisory Committee meets monthly to assist in developing and revising the mental health plan that drives mental health, developmental disability and substance abuse services for the five county area. Plate sale

The male ministry of Smith Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Enfield will hold a plate sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, at Lowe’s Grocery Parking lot in Enfield. They will serve chicken, fish, string beans, coleslaw, potatos, rolls and dessert. Prices range from $6 to $7. All donations will go toward the church building fund.

Yard sale and auction

Galatia Baptist Church will hold its annual missions yard sale and auction on Saturday, Oct. 11, rain or shine. The yard sale will be held from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m., with ham biscuits, hot dogs drinks and goodies for sale. Also, a Christmas gift shop will be open all day. A barbecue supper will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m., cooked by the Kelly Davis crew for $7. Eat in or take out. The auction will begin at 7 p.m. with more than 100 items offered.

Community Arts Day

Community Arts Day will be held from 2 to 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Cultural and Wellness Center in Jackson.

The Northampton County Cultural Arts Committee will  sponsor artist Bryant Holsenbeck for a week-long residency with the community. To celebrate her visit, the community arts day will include unveiling a piece(s) of art created by community members for display at the Cultural and Wellness Center; an art contest for middle and high school students;    displaying of local artists’ work; and musical entertainment.

Holsenbeck has been collecting “stuff” and transforming it into art for more than a decade. “Americans create more garbage than any other culture.” She wants people to think, when they view her art, about the “stuff” we use and throw away. Trip to State Fair

The Faison Senior Center will sponsor a fun day trip to the N.C. State Fair Senior Day on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Trip to the Apple Harvest Festival

The Faison Senior Center will sponsor a one-day trip to the Apple Harvest Festival at Drumheller’s Orchard on Saturday, Oct. 18. The cost is $48, which includes transportation on a deluxe motor coach and a day full of fun with entertainment of country music, apple sling shot, hayrides and purchasing fresh picked apples, crafts, good foods, pumpkins and many other things to do. Adventurers schedule meeting for Nov. 15

The Adventurers of Lake Gaston Baptist Church will not have an October meeting because of an Oct. 8 trip to Lancaster, Pa. The next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 15. At that time, the fall and Christmas craft fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Trip to Charleston planned

A chartered bus trip with the Sunshine Travel Club to Charleston, S.C., is planned for Dec. 5-7. The trip will include a tour of one of America’s oldest working plantations, tour of Charleston, dinner and cruise on the Spirit of Carolina. The group will stay in the heart of the Historic District in Charleston, within walking distance of the famous open market. There will be much more to see and do. Emergency food assistance

Northampton County residents who are low or fixed income may qualify to receive food given out at the Big Heart Pantry located at Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 1408 River Road, Henrico. Eligibility is determined on income or emergency need. For assistance, applicants may apply from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturdays, at Cedar Grove.

Library changes hours

The Roanoke Rapids Public Library will be open to the public on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Fall special programs at T.J. Davis

Fall special programs at T.J. Davis Recreation Center include:

Self defense — Learn how to defend yourself against the physical dangers in today’s world. Classes will be held from 7 to 8 p.m., on Tuesdays; instructor, Ricky Jordan.

Shagging — Learn how to shag from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., on  Thursdays, beginning Oct. 16. Cost is $10 individual, $15 couple residents; $20 individual and $30 couple non-residents. Instructors will be Danny Haislip and Stephanie Light.

Toddler time —  Free fun time in the gym for mommy and child form 9 to 11 a.m., on Monday, Thursday and Friday.

Fall fitness classes, ongoing, pay per month:

Step aerobics — Moderate high impact, from 5:30 to 6:30, Monday and Wednesday.

Aerobics — Low moderate impact, from 6 to 7 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday.

Karate — Tuesdays, 7 to 8 p.m.; instructor, Fran Harvell.

These classes will be $10 for residents and $20 for non-residents.

Also, a walking program for non-residents, where participants may use the indoor walking track costs $10 for non-residents for two months of access.

Halloween Spooktacular 2008 will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31. Free carnival; the haunted house costs extra. The carnival is for ages 12 and under and the haunted house is not for young children. Wear your best costume and bring a treat bag to gather goodies.

Farmers market to be open until Nov. 22

The Roanoke Valley Farmers Market will remain open until Nov. 22. Fresh local produce, baked goods, breads, cakes, pies and preserves will be available on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Got yard sale and flea market items? Upcoming trips sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Senior Citizens Association

The Roanoke Valley Senior Citizens Association will sponsor the following trips:

Tuesday, Oct. 18, North Carolina State Fair, cost is $23. This is just the cost of transportation. The bus will leave at 8 a.m. from the Jo Story Senior Center and will leave the fairgrounds at 5 p.m. for the return trip home, and the deadline is Oct. 10.

Thursday, Nov. 13, Rocky Hock Playhouse will present “Star Over Bethlehem.” The cost for the trip is $42, which includes transportation, lunch and the play; deadline is Oct. 15.

Monday, Dec. 8, Christmas show at American Music Jubilee in Selma, and the deadline is Nov. 14.

Free Internet messaging available at HRMC

Patients and caregivers can now keep in contact with extended family and friends easier than ever before, thanks to a new link on the Halifax Regional Web site. HRMC has added a feature on its homepage offering easy access to CaringBridge.

CaringBridge is an organization dedicated to supporting and connecting loved ones during illnesses or recoveries through free personalized Web sites. CaringBridge Web sites help by reducing the burden of keeping family and friends updated on the status of the patient’s condition and recovery. Simple step-by-step instructions guide users through the process of creating a Web site, complete with pictures, background stories and daily journal entries. 

Each Web site features a guest book, allowing patients and caregivers to communicate with friends and family members.  CaringBridge sites also allow patients and caregivers to restrict who may view the site or post messages.

Patients and family members at Halifax Regional are welcome to bring a wireless Internet enabled laptop or use a computer in the medical library to start their own personalized CaringBridge Web site.

After 5 Club to meet

The After 5 Club, affiliated with Stonecroft Ministries, will present “Bountiful Autumn” from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 21, at david’s restaurant ($10.25 inclusive.) Oct. 21-25

Now is the time to make plans to enter the 52nd annual Halifax-Northampton County Fair, planned for Oct. 21-25. One-hundred dollars will be awarded to the best educational booth in the following categories: Youth group, adult group, 4-H or volunteer group.

If you grow a crop or a plant, can a fruit or a vegetable,

bake a cake or a loaf of bread, you can enter the County Fair.

If you sew, quilt, or knit, make a basket or a ceramic pot, draw a picture or take a photograph, you can enter the County Fair.

There are classes for adults and juniors, as young as 3 to 5 years of age. Prize money and Rrbbons will be awarded to the best exhibits.

Halloween youth dance

The Gasburg Volunteer  Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary will host its annual Halloween youth dance from 7 to 10 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24. All ages are welcome (6 and under must have adult supervision). Admission is $5 each and tickets will be available at the door.

Wellness Festival

Northampton County residents will hold its first annual Northampton Wellness Festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Northampton County Cultural and Wellness Center in Jackson. Participants can attend health screenings, see health exhibits, get flu shots, listen to educational sessions, sample healthy foods and win door prizes. The event is sponsored by the Northampton Office on Aging, Northampton County Health Department, J. W. Faison Senior Center, N.C. Cooperative Extension and Northampton Healthy Carolinians. Northwest Halifax High School PTSA

The Northwest Halifax High School PTSA meeting will be held at 6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 13, in the cafeteria. The Cultural Arts Department will provide entertainment. Roanoke Rapids Library to be closed Oct. 13

The Roanoke Rapids Public Library will be closed on Monday, Oct. 13, for a staff development day.  The library will reopen on Oct. 14 with regular hours of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. to  6 p.m.; and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Donate used cell phones and inkjet cartridges

Please donate used cell phones and inkjet cartridges to help raise much needed funds for the Roanoke Rapids High School prom. RRHS is collecting used cell phones and inkjet cartridges through March 15 for the purpose of prom. This organization will receive money from Phoneraiser for each item collected during this fundraiser. Phoneraiser is a company that specializes in recycling and refurbishing used technology. Donations will help protect the environment and unwanted cell phones and inkjet cartridges will be recycled in accordance with EPA regulations or refurbished and reused. Phoneraiser makes unneeded technology available to those who can use it, while keeping it out of the landfill. If improperly disposed of, the cell phone can pollute up to 132,000 liters of drinking water. Donations may be tax deductible. All cell phones and inkjet cartridges are accepted and can be donated at the Roanoke Rapids High School Office, 800 Hamilton St.

Seeking crafters

The Conway Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor its 17th annual “Ho, Ho! Ho! Christmas Craft Show” from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 29, at Conway Middle School. Plans for the show includes lots of crafts, food and fun.

Dawson Elementary fall festival

Dawson Elementary School will hold its annual fall festival from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7. There will be fun and games, door prizes, king and queen crowning, a country store, and refreshments such as hot dogs, candy, funnel cakes, drinks, a special appearance by the “Shoney Bear” and much more. Admission is $1; ages 3 and under are free.

Hobgood Clinic

The Hobgood Clinic, a free diabetes testing and education center run by medical students at East Carolina University, meets at 8:30 a.m., the first and second Saturday of every month, at the Thomas Shields Community Center in Hobgood. Garysburg Youth Center

The Garysburg Youth Center, on Highway 186 in Garysburg, is now open to school-aged children in Northampton County for $5 per month. The hours of operation are 3:15 to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Applications are still being accepted.

African-American Festival

The 11th annual African-American Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, at Hertford County Middle School in Murfreesboro. The N.C. Department of Correction will have a job fair; free screenings will be provided by the Moble Health Clinic; entertainment featuring a step show, praise dancing, college bands and high school bands. A variety of merchandise will be available; displays include military collections, dolls, antiques, a black history collection and more, along with a variety  of foods. Northampton County’s Work First Plan

The North Carolina General Assembly requires counties to make available a copy of the County Work First Program Plan which addresses local needs. Work First is North Carolina’s program to administer the federal Temporary Assistance for Needy Families block grant that supports an array of services. A planning committee, including representatives from local government, public and private organizations, have reviewed and assisted in developing the plan for Northampton County for the period of Oct. 1, 2009, through Sept. 30, 2011. The public may review and comment on this draft plan until Oct. 17, 2008, at the Northampton County Department of Social Services and the Northampton County Manager’s Office.

Country Christmas

Calvary United Methodist Church will hold its annual Country Christmas from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday Nov. 1, in the fellowship hall, 133 Calvary Church Road, Littleton. Lunch will be featuring homemade soup, hotdogs with all the trimmings, navy beans, sausage biscuits and assorted desserts. There will be a huge assortment of crafts, plus homemade baked goods.

 

Potentate Ball

The 12th annual Electric Vehicle Rally will be held Nov. 7-8, at Northampton County High School-East. There will a circuit event, autocross, trouble-shooting, pit crew competition and a range event. The event will take palce off of Highway 158 in Old Tavern, N.C. 750 NCHS-East Road, Conway NC 27820. Horse show

The Halifax County Horse and Livestock Council will sponsor a Tri-County Horse Show at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Horse Livestock Complex, located between Interstate 95 on Highway 903. Entry fees are $6 per class.

The show is free to spectators and a concession will be available. In case of rain, the show will be rescheduled at 9:30 a.m., Sunday, Oct. 12. Rocky, the Amazing Trick Mule, will perform during the show.

Union Mission Food Box Giveaway

A Union Mission Food Box Giveaway will be held from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 22.  Families in need should go by the main building at 1310 Roanoke Ave., in Roanoke Rapids to get a ticket (250 available). Take the ticket to the side door of the warehouse and pick up the food box. Northampton and Halifax county residents are eligible.   You must have a valid N.C. picture ID and a Food Stamp card  or a blue Bread and Pastry card issued by the intake department at the Union Mission. Halloween costume contest and Trick or Treat

Century 21 Betsey’s will sponsor a Halloween costume contest and Trick or Treat for children 12 and under, from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31. There will be two age groups, five and under and 6 to 12 years old. Categories will be scariest, cutest and most creative. Prizes will be awarded to the winners. Family of the Year contest

The Northampton County Rotary Club will sponsor a Family of the Year contest as part of its Empower the Family project. Churches and other organizations may nominate a family in their community. From all nominations, a 2008 Family of the Year will be chosen and awarded $200 and a plaque. Dawson Elementary PTSA Meeting

Dawson Elementary School will hold its first PTSA meeting of the year at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 14, in the school’s multi-purpose room. All parents and guardians are urged to attend. Various speakers will be in attendance to discuss important and pertinent school topics. Door prizes will be given at the end of the meeting.

Halifax-Northampton Regional Airport Authority

Tillery People’s Clinic

‘Southern Gold’ set for Oct. 20-21

“Southern Gold” will be presented by the Roanoke Rapids High School Choirs at 6 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 20-21, at the fellowship hall of Rosemary United Methodist Church.

This will be an evening of southern food and entertainment featuring a southern-style meal of barbecue, whole white potatoes, coleslaw, baked beans, corn bread and tea, which will be prepared by Leann Seelman and members of her staff. Students will perform songs of the south, including folk songs, spirituals, selections by Stephen Foster and songs from the musical “Porgy and Bess” with Dwight Berry accompanying on piano. There will even be some Southern Rock with songs like “Black Water” and “Sweet Home Alabama.”

Weldon High School SGA to host candidates forum

The Weldon High School Student Government Association will host a candidates forum at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 28, in the cafeteria . The forum will feature candidates running for the Weldon City School Board of Education. Candidates seeking seats are incumbents, Barbara A. Balmer and Jerry L. Simmons; and challengers, Eckie Backus, Hugh Credle, Alberta Greene, Gladys Walden and Regina Brooks (write-in candidate). Candidates will be given an opportunity to discuss their platforms and the public will be allowed to ask questions of these individuals relevant to the welfare of our school system.
