No probable cause found in Yellorday murder case

HALIFAX — The case against four men charged in an April murder ended Thursday when a Superior Court judge found no probable cause.

Halifax County court officials confirmed this morning no probable cause was found in the cases against Charles “Oosie” Hockaday, Damien “Dang-Dang” Mitchell and Trayvon Purnell. A fourth man, Robbie Jones Jr., had been indicted in the slaying of Jerry Yellorday earlier. According to court officials, all proceedings in the four cases have ceased.

Yellorday, 29, was shot April 3 as he sat in his vehicle outside his residence. Investigators have said the car was either in the driveway or the roadway when a small gray vehicle with three people inside drove up. Two of the occupants, who were armed with shotguns, got out. Shots were fired while Yellorday was still in the vehicle.

Halifax County Sheriff’s Office investigators have said the motive in the case was robbery. District Attorney Bill Graham could not be reached for immediate comment this morning.

Maj. Bruce Temple of the Halifax County Sheriff’s Office said, “It’s safe to say the investigation is not closed.”

Temple declined to say whether the sheriff’s office would continue to investigate the four men they originally charged in the case — Hockaday, Mitchell, Purnell and Jones — and declined to elaborate on the probable cause hearing.

    " How can you have a confession from one man who say to be involved in the allegations and you dismiss the case???? Who in their right mind would say they committed a crime and didnt do it murder at that. Yes its clear someone is working for the POLICE. "
