ROANOKE RAPIDS — It could be called Uptown Friday Fright instead of Uptown Friday Night.

That will be the theme of the last Uptown Friday Night for the year, a Halloween extravaganza that includes a haunted trivia tour, pumpkin carving and painting and a dance contest.

The event gets under way Friday in the 1000 block of Roanoke Avenue at 6 p.m. and will last until 11 p.m.

Kim Simpson, secretary of the Roanoke Avenue Merchants Professional Association, said children and adults are welcome to bring carved or painted pumpkins take them to the Arts Council building for judging. There will also be contests for costumes and dancing. Sign-up for the dance and costume contest is at Java Junction.

Prizes include dinner for two at david’s, gifts from Tillery Designs, T-shirts, brunch for two at Timeless Tea, a gift basket and gifts from Java Junction.

One of the highlights of the evening will be a haunted trivia tour where scenes from different movies are recreated live along the Avenue. Sign-up for the tours, which costs $3 — a donation to the Association — will be done at Timeless Tea. The tours are from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. If you get half the answers right your name goes into a fish bowl for a prize drawing.

D and S DJ Service will provide the music and 97.9 will broadcast live from the Wilkie Real Estate van.

Simpson said the Association has been pleased with the events. “We truly believe we have worked out all the kinks for proper resolutions. The state and city are willing to work with us next year,” she said.

Next year the Association is hoping to start the events in March. “I think awareness is growing and people are seeing the good things there are to do.”
