The Faison Senior Center will sponsor a fun day trip to the N.C. State Fair Senior Day on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Trip to the Apple Harvest Festival

The Faison Senior Center will sponsor a one-day trip to the Apple Harvest Festival at Drumheller’s Orchard on Saturday, Oct. 18. The cost is $48, which includes transportation on a deluxe motor coach and a day full of fun with entertainment of country music, apple sling shot, hayrides and purchasing fresh picked apples, crafts, good foods, pumpkins and many other things to do. Adventurers schedule meeting for Nov. 15

The Adventurers of Lake Gaston Baptist Church will not have an October meeting because of an Oct. 8 trip to Lancaster, Pa. The next meeting is scheduled for Nov. 15. At that time, the fall and Christmas craft fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

TOPS Club to meet Wednesday

Project Graduation fundraiser

Disabled American Veterans to meet

The Disabled American Veterans Roanoke Valley Chapter 15 will meet at 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 20, at 801 Charlotte St., Roanoke Rapids. All members, auxiliary and volunteer transportation network drivers are encouraged to attend.  Anyone interested in being a volunteer driver to help transport veterans to the Veterans Administration Medical Centers are also welcome to attend.

HCC offers Effective Teacher Training class

Halifax Community College will offer an Effective Teacher Training class from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, Oct. 21 through Dec. 4, at the Enfield Off Campus Center. The class is designed for substitute, pre-service and in-service teachers. Taught by instructor Charlene Hilliard-Nicholson, activities will enable educators to effectively integrate research and practice. Participants will receive 3.0 CEU credits for completing the class. Cost is $55.

Habitat for Humanity to meet

The Board of Directors of the Halifax/Northampton Habitat for Humanity will meet at 5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the ReSale Store, 14 E. 2nd St., Roanoke Rapids.

American Legion Post 425 to meet

Fire station ribbon cutting

The Town of Garysburg and the Garysburg Fire Department, in cooperation with Roy L. Bell, mayor, the Board of Commissioners and Fire Chief Nathaniel Ausby will hold a dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting of the new fire station at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 30.

United Daughters to meet

The Roanoke Rapids Chapter #2332 United Daughters of the Confederacy will meet at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 28, at david’s restaurant on Roanoke Avenue.

Kirkwood Adams to take reservations

The Kirkwood Adams Community Center will begin taking bookings for July 2009 at 9 a.m., Monday, Nov. 3, at the Jo Story Senior Center, 701 Jackson St., Roanoke Rapids.

Bookings are taken for the available dates on a first-come, first-served basis. When there are several people waiting to book the center, the first person in line will be taken first. A $50 non-refundable deposit is due at the time of the booking.

‘Southern Gold’ set for Oct. 20-21

“Southern Gold” will be presented by the Roanoke Rapids High School choirs at 6 p.m., Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 20-21, at the fellowship hall of Rosemary United Methodist Church.

This will be an evening of food and entertainment featuring a southern-style meal of barbecue, whole white potatoes, coleslaw, baked beans, corn bread and tea, which will be prepared by Leann Seelman and members of her staff. Students will perform songs of the South, including folk songs, spirituals, selections by Stephen Foster and songs from the musical “Porgy and Bess” with Dwight Berry accompanying on piano. There will even be some Southern Rock with songs like “Black Water” and “Sweet Home Alabama.”

Fundraiser for Kelly Singh

The Roanoke Valley Lake Gaston Board of REALTORS are holding a fundraiser for Kelly Singh, who was diagnosed this spring with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and has no insurance.  She has served on the board  as president for two years and on the board for more than seven years in various other positions. She is also a volunteer for Crime Stoppers, The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of America, RRHS Band Boosters, The Odessa of the Minds, and has led the youth (EYC) of All Saints’ Episcopal Church as well as many other organizations in the community. The board is selling raffle tickets for two $250 gas cards for two for $5 and can be purchased at All Saints' church office, Wilkie Real Estate in Roanoke Rapids and on the Lake, Strickland Real Estate office, Collier Harley Davidson, or one of the realtors. Upcoming trips sponsored by the Roanoke Valley Senior Citizens Association

The Roanoke Valley Senior Citizens Association will sponsor the following trips:

Tuesday, Oct. 21, North Carolina State Fair, cost is $23. This is just the cost of transportation. The bus will leave at 8 a.m. from the Jo Story Senior Center and will leave the fairgrounds at 5 p.m. for the return trip home, and the deadline is Oct. 10.

Thursday, Nov. 13, Rocky Hock Playhouse will present “Star Over Bethlehem.” The cost for the trip is $42, which includes transportation, lunch and the play; deadline is Oct. 15.

Monday, Dec. 8, Christmas show at American Music Jubilee in Selma, and the deadline is Nov. 14.

Halloween youth dance

The Gasburg Volunteer  Fire Department’s Ladies Auxiliary will host its annual Halloween youth dance from 7 to 10 p.m., Friday, Oct. 24. All ages are welcome (6 and under must have adult supervision). Admission is $5 each and tickets will be available at the door.

Northwest Halifax High School PTSA

The Northwest Halifax High School PTSA meeting will be held at 6 p.m., Monday, Oct. 20, in the cafeteria. The Cultural Arts Department will provide entertainment. A student incentive of 100 points will be given to students who are accompanied by their parent or guardian. All students, parents and guardians are encouraged to attend and join the PTSA.

J.T. Doles to meet

Small business workshop

A small business workshop titled “Money Management for Entrepreneurs” will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the Roanoke Rapids Public Library.  This workshop will be presented by James Mills, a business and financial adviser, and is sponsored by BICOS (Business Information Center Outreach Service). Participants will receive information about accepting payments, establishing payment and credit terms and managing finances. Halifax County Black Caucus to hold candidates forum

The Halifax County Black Caucus will host its fourth candidates forum at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Tillery Community Center, 321 Community Center Road, Halifax/Tillery.

According to Marilyn Harris, chairperson, “Get Out the Vote/Education Sessions” are being sponsored as the caucus and other organizations host local election forums across the county. While all candidates have been notified by mail, this is an open invitation to them and all citizens who are concerned with the issues in Halifax County, Weldon School District, District Court, First Congressional District NC Senate and House of Representative races, as well others. This will be the final forum leading up to the Tuesday, Nov. 4 Election Day in the United States. Light refreshments will be served.

Trick or Treat activities

 There will be an alternative to trick or treat activities. The Bysicel Ministry of Lake Gston Baptist Church will present “Let Your Light Shine” from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31. There will be games, crafts, praise and worship for every member of the family to enjoy. Conway VFD donation supper and auction

The Conway Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual donation supper and auction from 5 to 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1. The menu will feature barbecue, fried chicken, barbecued potatoes, slaw, cornbread and beverages. The auction will begin at 7 p.m., with auctioneer Glen Warren. A bake sale will be held at 4 p.m.

Lake Gaston Flea Market

Bizzy Bea’s will hold a free pet photo contest with prizes from 9 am. until noon, Saturday, Nov. 1, inside the Gaston Flea Market on River Road, Henrico, during the fall festival. For information, call Bizzy Bea at (252) 586-5551. Donations are optional and accepted for Rainbow Animal Rescue.

Snoozie Bear, as seen in Epcot, will also be featured at the festival. Bring a cameras and join the fun.

Pork barbecue dinner

The Arcola Rural Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a pork barbecue dinner at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 1. Eat in or take out. Cost is $6 per plate with dessert included. Beverages will be available for purchase. Tickets are available from any fire department member.

Longest married couple

The Northampton County Rotary Club is searching to find the longest married couple in Northampton County as part of its “Empower the Family” project. CADA offers pre-home ownership class 

Pre-homeownership classes will be held from 5:30-7 p.m., at the CADA office, 120 Sessoms Drive, Rich Square, on the following Mondays: Oct. 20 and 27 and Nov. 3, 10, 17 and 24. Different topics will be covered at each class. Pre-registration is required and may be made by calling CADA at (252) 539-4155.

Life Chain event is Sunday

Join the Life Chain to help save babies and moms from the horror of abortion from 2 to 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 19. Bring family and friends and spend on hour in prayerful witness. Life  Chain will be meet in front of Centennial Park, 7th and Roanoke Ave., at 1:45 p.m., to receive signs and will be assigned to places. Everyone will stand silently for one hour, 10 feet apart, holding signs that witness the sanctity of life. Signs will be provided.

Nurse Aide I class slated

The Continuing Education Department of Halifax Community College in Weldon will offer a Nurse Aide I class 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, Oct. 20 through Dec. 23. Registration for the class is $84.50. 

The NAI program prepares individuals to work under the supervision of licensed nursing professionals in performing nursing care and services to patients in a hospital, nursing facility or home care agency. Emphasis is placed on the many facets of the aging process as well as patients’ rights, nutrition, safety, special care procedures and the role of the nursing assistant as a health care team member. After successful completion of the program, students will be listed in the N.C. Division of Facility Services’ Nurse Aide Registry.

Pre-registration is required. The instructor will provide more information about class requirements and expenses. Students should contact the Continuing Education Department (Building 400) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, for admission requirements and registration. General Matt W. Ransom Camp 861

General Matt W. Ransom Camp 861 Sons of the Confederate Veterans will meet at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 22, at Ralph’s Barbecue in Weldon. All who are interested in Southern history are invited to attend.

Town of Enfield meeting rescheduled

The Town of Enfield has rescheduled its board meeting from Oct. 20, to Monday, Oct. 27, beginning with a work session at 5:30 p.m., followed by the regular meeting at 7:30 p.m.

Planning workshop

Northeast Academy will host a college planning workshop at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 5. Amy Denton, a College Foundation of North Carolina representative will conduct the workshop, which will include college application tips, college test preparation, finding money for college and other topics. Parents of Northeast juniors and seniors are encouraged to attend with their children. All other Northeast parents are also invited, but the focus will be on college applications and financial aid.

 

Garysburg Christmas Parade

The town of Garysburg is now accepting entries for the annual Christmas parade to be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 13.

Any civic, church group, school, business, antique car or tractor are encouraged to participate. Bands floats, classic cars, motorcycles, horses, homecoming courts, fire trucks, etc., are welcomed.

Call the town hall from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 536-2167 for entry forms or information. Deadline for entries is Thursday, Dec. 11.

Fall special programs at T.J. Davis

Fall special programs at T.J. Davis Recreation Center include:

Self defense — Learn how to defend yourself against the physical dangers in today’s world. Classes will be held from 7 to 8 p.m., on Tuesdays; instructor, Ricky Jordan.

Shagging — Learn how to shag from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., on  Thursdays, beginning today. Cost is $10 individual, $15 couple residents; $20 individual and $30 couple non-residents. Instructors will be Danny Haislip and Stephanie Light.

Toddler time —  Free fun time in the gym for mommy and child form 9 to 11 a.m., on Monday, Thursday and Friday.

Fall fitness classes, ongoing, pay per month:

Step aerobics — Moderate high impact, from 5:30 to 6:30, Monday and Wednesday.

Aerobics — Low moderate impact, from 6 to 7 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Karate — Tuesdays, 7 to 8 p.m.; instructor, Fran Harvell.

These classes will be $10 for residents and $20 for non-residents.

Also, a walking program for non-residents, where participants may use the indoor walking track costs $10 for non-residents for two months of access.

Halloween Spooktacular 2008 will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31. Free carnival; the haunted house costs extra. The carnival is for ages 12 and under and the haunted house is not for young children. Wear your best costume and bring a treat bag to gather goodies.
