Carrie Ann Tucker Epps

ROANOKE RAPIDS — Mrs. Carrie Ann Tucker Epps died   Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008, at her home.

She was born Feb. 20, 1948, in Northampton County, the daughter of the late Ernest “Wood” Tucker and Julia Anderson Tucker. Carrie received her education from the former Ralph J. Bunche School in Weldon. For 26 years, she resided in Farrockaway, N.Y., until she returned home. Since relocating to Roanoke Rapids, she was employed in several jobs; as housekeeper at Interstate Inn in Weldon, custodian at Halifax Community College, IH Cleaning services at KapStone Paper Company, and lastly, as a personal care aide at Interim Health Services.  

She became a “born again” Christian at an early age at the Church of God in Christ in Roosevelt, Long Island. Upon moving to Roanoke Rapids, she joined the Way of the Cross Church in the Lincoln Heights area of Roanoke Rapids, under Bishop Dr. Martha Parker. Later, she became a member under Pastor Catherine Hale’s ministry, where she served faithfully on the usher board, where she remained until her death.

On Sept. 18, 1998, Carrie was blessed to be joined in holy matrimony to Minister Alfonza Epps of Raleigh (formerly of Halifax), who preceded her in death. Carrie was also preceded in death by two sisters-in-law and a great-nephew. 

Carrie was a very vibrant woman who loved her family and all whom she encountered. First and foremost in her life was her love for God. She generally kept a smile and loved showing and expressing her love.

Those left to cherish her memories are five sisters, Annie Bell Tucker of Farrockaway, Catherine Hale (Melvin) of Roanoke Rapids and Mae Ellen Clark (Gregory), Deborah Tucker and Dora Tucker (friend, Steve), all of Weldon; six brothers, Ernest Tucker (Maude) of Washington, D.C., Jessie Tucker, Samuel Tucker, Dennis Tucker and Donald Tucker, all of Weldon, and Curtis Tucker (Eyvette) of Garysburg; two sisters-in-law, Genetha and Dorothy Epps of Halifax; two brothers-in-law, Clossie Epps Jr., of High Point and Willie Epps of Portsmouth, Va.; a special godsister, Velma Merriweather of Weldon; seven special uncles and aunts, Earl Anderson (Bertha) of Weldon,  Ella Mae Stansberry of Roanoke Rapids, Annie Bell Harvey (Earlie) of Garysburg, James Anderson (Evelyn) of Philadelphia, and William Anderson, Thelma Anderson and Bernice Anderson, all of New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends, including three special friends, Carolyn Clay, Joyce Mallory and Margie of New York.

A visitation will be held from noon until 2 p.m., with the funeral service immediately following the visitation at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 23, at Way of the Cross Outreach Center in Roanoke Rapids, with Dr. and Pastor Doretha Allen officiating. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.
