James Winborne Martin

CONWAY — Mr. James Winborne Martin, 89, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2008, at Autumn Care of Nash County in Nashville after a lengthy illness.

 He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Holloman Martin; his parents, Essie Martin and James Franklin Martin; a sister, Dara Smith; a brother, Riddick Martin; and an infant son, James Winborne Martin Jr.

A native of Northampton County, Mr. Martin was retired from the United States Postal Service after 39 years as a rural mail carrier.  He was a lifelong member of Conway Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and taught Sunday school, was a board member for Conway High School and Master Mason in Pendleton Masonic Lodge No. 418, having held the office of Master of the Lodge. One of his proudest achievements was being an Army veteran stationed in Europe and Africa during World War II.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Emmie Grant Martin of their home;  four children,  Melinda Harris and her husband, Thad,  of Littleton, Charles Martin and his wife, Jewell, of Franklin, Va., Joanne Robertson and her husband, Art, of Greenville and Jim Martin of Wilson;  two stepchildren, Glen Warren and his wife, Barbara, of Battleboro and Joanne Bass and her husband, Cam, of Momeyer;  three grandchildren, Jennifer Corbett and her husband, Gene, of Greenville, Beth Davis and her husband, Carl, of Fuquay Varina and Rebecca McLawhorn and her husband, Tyler, of Winston-Salem; three stepgrandchildren, Travis Warren and his wife, Niki, of Battleboro, Chad Vinson and his wife, Laurie, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Shannon Hinton and her husband, Daniel, of Rocky Mount; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family received friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 25, at Bridgers Funeral Home Inc. in Conway, which handled the arrangements.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m., today, Oct. 26, at Conway Baptist Church, with the Rev. James Hester and the Rev. Willie McLawhorn officiating.  Burial will follow in the Town of Conway Cemetery with military honors.

The family has requested that in lieu of flowers anyone wishing to share a memorial gift to please do so to the Veterans Memorial Park, P.O. Box 365, Conway NC  27820.
