Halloween dance set for Oct. 25

Members of the Payback Motorcycle Club will sponsor a Halloween Dance from 9 p.m. until 1 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 25, at Clem’s Grand Ballroom in Weldon. Dress attire is casual or wear a Halloween costume. The three best costumes will receive a monetary award. Hors d’oeuvres will be served and the cost is $10 at the door.

Guests are invited to come out and enjoy themselves and meet the young bike riders form the Roanoke Valley area, Durham, Henderson, Youngsville, Graham, Creedmoor, Roxoboro and Greensboro. These young men are dedicated to reaching out and providing services to people and organizations in their various communities. Fire station ribbon cutting

The Town of Garysburg and the Garysburg Fire Department, in cooperation with Roy L. Bell, mayor, the Board of Commissioners and Fire Chief Nathaniel Ausby will hold a dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting of the new fire station at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 30.

Light the Night Against Domestic Violence

 October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In honor of this, the Halifax County Domestic Violence Task Force, also known as MAAFIA (Making Abusers Accountable for Intentional Actions), will sponsor a “Light the Night” Domestic Violence Awareness program at 7 p.m.,  Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Halifax United Methodist Church, 152 S. King St., Halifax.

Various speakers will be on hand to talk about domestic violence, including a domestic violence survivor.  There will be a candle lighting ceremony to remember those who have been victims of domestic violence related homicides in North Carolina this year.

Halloween fun at the Halifax County Library

 Halloween fun will be had at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the Halifax County Library Auditorium.

Get ready for an evening of enjoyment as the Halifax Players will present the play “The Three Betty Goats Gruff,”  based on the more familiar fairy tale “The Three Billy Goats Gruff.” The twists and turns of the classic tale will delight and surprise all viewers.  A costume parade for children up to 12 years of age will be held after the play. All children will receive a treat bag. Everyone is encouraged, but not required, to wear a costume. According to Jane Richardson, children’s librarian and coordinator of the event, “this event is not for children only, adults will be surprised at the riotous performance that will make them scream with laughter.”

Christmas show at Myrtle Beach

There will be a three-day trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C., Dec. 2-4, to awaken your spirit and start shopping for Christmas. Jackson to observe Halloween

The Town of Jackson will observe Halloween for trick-or-treaters 12 years old and younger from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31.

Jackson United Methodist trunk or treat

Jackson United Methodist Church, 206 Thomas Bragg Drive, Jackson, will host a trunk or treat a Halloween community outreach event on Friday, Oct. 31. There will be a free hot dog supper from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by the trunk or treat from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Children will come around to each car parked at the fellowship hall to trunk or treat instead of going house to house. Shearins Chapel trunk-or-treat

Shearins Chapel Baptist Church will hold trunk-or-treat at 6 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31. There will be fun, games and candy for all ages. There will be a prize for the best decorated car and a prize for the best dressed Biblical character.

Church trip to Jamaica, N.Y.

First Baptist Church of Hodgestown will journey to Jamaica, N.Y.,  on Friday, Nov. 7. They will spend two nights and will go to the worship service on Sunday morning, Nov. 9. There are a few seats available for anyone wishing to travel with the church and the cost is $66. The deadline for rooms has already been met, however persons wishing to stay at the hotel may secure rooms at check-in. Interested persons may contact Augustus C. SMILES Halloween party

SMILES, a non-profit organization that holds activities for the handicapped in the Roanoke Valley and surrounding areas, will hold its annual Halloween party from 7 to 9:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31, at the American Legion building located on American Legion Road, south of Roanoke Rapids (fairground). Wear your best costume. Music will be provided by Jimmy Williams of Gasburg, Va. All participants must be accompanied by a caregiver.

Trick or Treat activities

 There will be an alternative to trick or treat activities. The Bysicel Ministry of Lake Gston Baptist Church will present “Let Your Light Shine” from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31. There will be games, crafts, praise and worship for every member of the family to enjoy. Halloween for Town of Garysburg

The Town of Garysburg will allow trick-or-treating from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31. Also, the Garysburg Youth Center, located on Highway 186 in Garysburg, in conjunction with the Ladies of Distinction, will provide Halloween activities for the youth from 3 to 6:30 p.m.

Halloween Spooktacular

Halloween Spooktacular 2008 will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31, at the T.J. Davis Recreation Center. Free carnival; the haunted house costs extra. The carnival is for ages 12 and under and the haunted house is not for young children. Wear your best costume and bring a treat bag to gather goodies.

Century 21 Betsey’s will sponsor a Halloween costume contest and Trick or Treat for children 12 and under, from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31. There will be two age groups, five and under and 6 to 12 years old. Categories will be scariest, cutest and most creative. Prizes will be awarded to the winners. Adoption Awareness celebration

The  month of November is designated as the National Month of adoption. Halifax County Department of Social Services will sponsor a adoption awareness celebration from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1, at Halifax County DSS, Highway 301, Halifax. There will be free games, food and fun.

Country Christmas

Calvary United Methodist Church will hold its annual Country Christmas from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday Nov. 1, in the fellowship hall, 133 Calvary Church Road, Littleton. Lunch will be featuring homemade soup, hotdogs with all the trimmings, navy beans, sausage biscuits and assorted desserts. There will be a huge assortment of crafts, plus homemade baked goods.

Rehoboth bazaar and luncheon

Rehoboth United Methodist Church, between Jackson and Rich Square, will hold is annual bazaar and luncheon from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1. Plates are $6 and will consist of barbecue, Brunswick stew (cooked by the men of the church) slaw, cornbread, lemon pound cake and tea. Eat in or take out. There will also be multiple homemade baked goods, jellies and preserves. There will also be a drawing for a 90 x 90 homemade quilt with a sunburst pattern. Lake Gaston Flea Market

Bizzy Bea’s will hold a free pet photo contest with prizes from 9 am. until noon, Saturday, Nov. 1, inside the Gaston Flea Market on River Road, Henrico, during the fall festival. Pork barbecue dinner

The Arcola Rural Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a pork barbecue dinner at 11:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 1. Eat in or take out. Cost is $6 per plate with dessert included. Beverages will be available for purchase. Tickets are available from any fire department member.

 Conway VFD donation supper and auction

The Conway Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual donation supper and auction from 5 to 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 1. The menu will feature barbecue, fried chicken, barbecued potatoes, slaw, cornbread and beverages. The auction will begin at 7 p.m., with auctioneer Glen Warren. A bake sale will be held at 4 p.m.

Kirkwood Adams to take reservations

The Kirkwood Adams Community Center will begin taking bookings for July 2009 at 9 a.m., Monday, Nov. 3, at the Jo Story Senior Center, 701 Jackson St., Roanoke Rapids.

Bookings are taken for the available dates on a first-come, first-served basis. When there are several people waiting to book the center, the first person in line will be taken first. A $50 non-refundable deposit is due at the time of the booking.

SAT prep classes

Free SAT prep classes will be held from 4 to 5 p.m., beginning Nov. 3, at The John 3:16 Center in Littleton. Classes will meet every Monday and Friday and are for students in 10th grade and up. The class will make preparations to take the test Saturday, Dec. 6, though testing on that date is not required. Students must be registered by Oct. 30 and spaces are limited. HCC offers Effective Teacher Training class

Halifax Community College will offer an Effective Teacher Training class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Nov. 3 through Dec. 17. The class is designed for substitute, pre-service and in-service teachers. Taught by instructor Rick Eason, activities will enable educators to effectively integrate research and practice. Participants will receive 3.6 CEU credits for completing the class. Cost is $60.

Harvest luncheon is Nov. 5

The Littleton Woman’s Club will hold its harvest luncheon from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the Littleton Lion’s Club building on the corner of Ransom Street and Highway 158 in Littleton. Dawson Elementary fall festival

Dawson Elementary School will hold its annual fall festival from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7. There will be fun and games, door prizes, king and queen crowning, a country store, and refreshments such as hot dogs, candy, funnel cakes, drinks, a special appearance by the “Shoney Bear” and much more. Admission is $1; ages 3 and under are free.

Pansy and viola sale at HCC

The Greenhouse and Grounds Maintenance Department at Halifax Community College will hold its annual pansy sale from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, through Nov. 7.

Pansy varieties available for purchase include Majestic Giants in scarlet, blue and bronze shades, purple, deep blue, yellow with blotch, white with blotch, golden and mixes. New this year are red and yellow, and blue and white varieties. Also violas, known as “Johnny Jump Ups” in yellow, blue, azure wing, deep blue, citrus mix, Johnny Jump-Up mix and all seasons mix will be available.

Each plant is in a 4-1/2-inch pot in flats of 15 pots. Costs are $1 per pot; $15 for a flat of 15 pots; $13.50 per flat with the purchase of five to nine flats; and $12 per flat with the purchase of 10 or more flats.  The fall sale will be held in the greenhouses at the far end of the property on the HCC main campus. African-American Festival

The 11th annual African-American Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, at Hertford County Middle School in Murfreesboro. The N.C. Department of Correction will have a job fair; free screenings will be provided by the Moble Health Clinic; entertainment featuring a step show, praise dancing, college bands and high school bands. A variety of merchandise will be available; displays include military collections, dolls, antiques, a black history collection and more, along with a variety  of foods. Veterans Day program

On Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, the Joint Veterans Committee will gather at 11 a.m., at the veterans memorial at Jack Laughery Park in Rocky Mount to show support for all veterans. Numerous honor guards will take part and the Honorable Mayor David Combs and a surprise military guest will give remarks.

Fundraiser for Kelly Singh

The Roanoke Valley Lake Gaston Board of REALTORS are holding a fundraiser for Kelly Singh, who was diagnosed this spring with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and has no insurance.  She has served on the board  as president for two years and on the board for more than seven years in various other positions. She is also a volunteer for Crime Stoppers, The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of America, RRHS Band Boosters, The Odessa of the Minds, and has led the youth (EYC) of All Saints’ Episcopal Church as well as many other organizations in the community. The board is selling raffle tickets for two $250 gas cards for two for $5 and can be purchased at All Saints' church office, Wilkie Real Estate in Roanoke Rapids and on the Lake, Strickland Real Estate office, Collier Harley Davidson, or one of the realtors. Adventurers schedule meeting for Nov. 15

The Adventurers of Lake Gaston Baptist Church will meet Saturday, Nov. 15. At that time, the fall and Christmas craft fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Family Life Center. All booths are full with some crafters coming from as far away as Greenville.

Donate used cell phones and inkjet cartridges

Please donate used cell phones and inkjet cartridges to help raise much needed funds for the Roanoke Rapids High School prom. RRHS is collecting used cell phones and inkjet cartridges through March 15 for the purpose of prom. This organization will receive money from Phoneraiser for each item collected during this fundraiser. Phoneraiser is a company that specializes in recycling and refurbishing used technology. Donations will help protect the environment and unwanted cell phones and inkjet cartridges will be recycled in accordance with EPA regulations or refurbished and reused. Phoneraiser makes unneeded technology available to those who can use it, while keeping it out of the landfill. If improperly disposed of, the cell phone can pollute up to 132,000 liters of drinking water. Donations may be tax deductible. All cell phones and inkjet cartridges are accepted and can be donated at the Roanoke Rapids High School Office, 800 Hamilton St.

The Roanoke Rapids High School Project Graduation is currently holding its fundraiser — selling Joe Corbi Pizza. Anyone interested in placing an order should contact any current RRHS senior or their parent.

Garysburg Christmas Parade

The town of Garysburg is now accepting entries for the annual Christmas parade to be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 13.

Any civic, church group, school, business, antique car or tractor are encouraged to participate. Bands floats, classic cars, motorcycles, horses, homecoming courts, fire trucks, etc., are welcomed.

Hannah’s Closet to hold sale

Hannah’s Closet, 258 Roanoke Ave., will hold a fall harvest sale featuring three bags of clothes for $5. Store hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Donations are accepted and Hannah’s will offer a tax deductible receipt. Donations are taken all day Monday through Saturday. Hannah’s also accepts household items, furniture, clothing, ladies, men’s and children’s cloths, shoes, handbags, used cell phones and jewelry. Items should be cleaned and gently used. All donations are greatly appreciated and Hannah’s thanks everyone for their continued support.

Stew sale and more

First United Methodist Church, 339 Roanoke Ave., Roanoke Rapids, will hold a Brunswick stew sale on Saturday, Nov. 15, behind the church. Stew will be $6 per quart, which will be ready for pickup between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. To place orders, call 537-2173 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Also, the women will hold a bake sale in the fellowship hall of the church. There will be baked goods, including cakes, pies, cookies, brownies, muffins and rolls. Also available will be frozen spaghetti sauce, soups, jams, jellies, pickles, chicken salad and pecans.

Stroke and osteoporosis screening

Residents living in and around the Roanoke Rapids community can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke. The complete screening package now includes a new heart rhythm screening, checking for irregular heartbeat, which is a major risk factor for stroke. Trip to Charleston, S.C.

A chartered bus trip with the Sunshine Travel Club to Charleston, S.C., is planned for Dec. 5-7. The trip will include a tour of one of America’s oldest working living plantation, a tour of Charleston, dinner and a cruise on the Spirit of Carolina. Fall special programs at T.J. Davis

Fall special programs at T.J. Davis Recreation Center include:

Self defense — Learn how to defend yourself against the physical dangers in today’s world. Classes will be held from 7 to 8 p.m., on Tuesdays; instructor, Ricky Jordan.

Shagging — Learn how to shag from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., on  Thursdays. Cost is $10 individual, $15 couple residents; $20 individual and $30 couple non-residents. Instructors will be Danny Haislip and Stephanie Light.

Toddler time —  Free fun time in the gym for mommy and child form 9 to 11 a.m., on Monday, Thursday and Friday.

Fall fitness classes, ongoing, pay per month:

Step aerobics — Moderate high impact, from 5:30 to 6:30, Monday and Wednesday.

Aerobics — Low moderate impact, from 6 to 7 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Karate — Tuesdays, 7 to 8 p.m.; instructor, Fran Harvell.

These classes will be $10 for residents and $20 for non-residents.

Also, a walking program for non-residents, where participants may use the indoor walking track costs $10 for non-residents for two months of access.

Fundraisers for Dylan Moore

American Legion Post 38 will hold a dance featuring 70s and 80s, disco, country and beach music from 7 p.m.-until, Friday, Nov. 14. The DJ will be Robert Powell. Tickets are $10. There will be food and BYOB (no brown bagging).

The post will also sponsor The Legends of North Carolina at 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 21. Featured will be Elvis, Barney Fife, Ernest T. Bass, Louie Armstrong, Roy Orbison and The Gaddie Girls, along with local talent. There will also be a Chinese Auction and food available. Tickets are $10. No alcohol.

Severn VFD turkey shoot

The Severn Volunteer Fire Department will hold a turkey shoot at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 6, 13, 20 and 27, at the Severn ballfield on Highway 35. There will be turkey, ham and cash rounds. Food and drink will also be for sale at the concession stand. For information, call 585-0411.

Family of the Year contest

The Northampton County Rotary Club will sponsor a Family of the Year contest as part of its Empower the Family project. Churches and other organizations may nominate a family in their community. From the nominations, a 2008 Family of the Year will be chosen and awarded $200 and a plaque. Potentate Ball
