Chicken and fish dinners
The Littleton Senior Citizens will sell chicken and fish dinners on Friday, Nov. 7, at The Littleton Community Center, 238 Oak St., Littleton. Dinners will be ready by 11 a.m., eat in or take out. The menu will consist of chicken or fish, string beans, cabbage, cole slaw, potato salad, boiled potatoes, rolls, cornbread, pie or cake for a cost of $7 per plate. Dawson Elementary fall festival
Dawson Elementary School will hold its annual fall festival from 6 to 9 p.m., Friday, Nov. 7. There will be fun and games, door prizes, king and queen crowning, a country store, and refreshments such as hot dogs, candy, funnel cakes, drinks, a special appearance by the “Shoney Bear” and much more. Admission is $1; ages 3 and under are free.
Town of Gaston events
The Town of Gaston Clerk’s Office and the Street and Public Works Department will be closed Tuesday, Nov. 11 for Veterans Day. The Town Council meeting scheduled for that day will be held at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 10.
The annual Christmas tree lighting will be held at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5, at the Town Hall, 223 Craige St. Refreshments will follow at the E. E. Odom Center.

HCC offers Effective Teacher Training class
Halifax Community College will offer an Effective Teacher Training class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday, through Dec. 17. The class is designed for substitute, pre-service and in-service teachers. Taught by instructor Rick Eason, activities will enable educators to effectively integrate research and practice. Severn VFD turkey shoot
The Severn Volunteer Fire Department will hold a turkey shoot at 6:30 p.m., Nov. 6, 13, 20 and 27, at the Severn ballfield on Highway 35. There will be turkey, ham and cash rounds. Food and drink will also be for sale at the concession stand. For information, call 585-0411.
Fundraisers for Dylan Moore
American Legion Post 38 will hold a dance featuring 70s and 80s, disco, country and beach music from 7 p.m.-until, Friday, Nov. 14. The DJ will be Robert Powell. Tickets are $10. There will be food and BYOB (no brown bagging).
The post will also sponsor The Legends of North Carolina at 6 p.m., Friday, Nov. 21. Featured will be Elvis, Barney Fife, Ernest T. Bass, Louie Armstrong, Roy Orbison and The Gaddie Girls, along with local talent. There will also be a Chinese Auction and food available. Tickets are $10. No alcohol.

Pansy and viola sale at HCC
The Greenhouse and Grounds Maintenance Department at Halifax Community College will hold its annual pansy sale from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, through Nov. 7.
Pansy varieties available for purchase include Majestic Giants in scarlet, blue and bronze shades, purple, deep blue, yellow with blotch, white with blotch, golden and mixes. New this year are red and yellow, and blue and white varieties. Also violas, known as “Johnny Jump Ups” in yellow, blue, azure wing, deep blue, citrus mix, Johnny Jump-Up mix and all seasons mix will be available.
Each plant is in a 4-1/2-inch pot in flats of 15 pots. Costs are $1 per pot; $15 for a flat of 15 pots; $13.50 per flat with the purchase of five to nine flats; and $12 per flat with the purchase of 10 or more flats. Adventurers schedule meeting for Nov. 15
The Adventurers of Lake Gaston Baptist Church will meet Saturday, Nov. 15. At that time, the fall and Christmas craft fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Family Life Center. All booths are full with some crafters coming from as far away as Greenville.
Stew sale and more
First United Methodist Church, 339 Roanoke Ave., Roanoke Rapids, will hold a Brunswick stew sale on Saturday, Nov. 15, behind the church. Stew will be $6 per quart, which will be ready for pickup between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. To place orders, call 537-2173 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Donate used cell phones and inkjet cartridges
Please donate used cell phones and inkjet cartridges to help raise much needed funds for the Roanoke Rapids High School prom. RRHS is collecting used cell phones and inkjet cartridges through March 15 for the purpose of prom. This organization will receive money from Phoneraiser for each item collected during this fundraiser. Phoneraiser is a company that specializes in recycling and refurbishing used technology. Donations will help protect the environment and unwanted cell phones and inkjet cartridges will be recycled in accordance with EPA regulations or refurbished and reused. Phoneraiser makes unneeded technology available to those who can use it, while keeping it out of the landfill. If improperly disposed of, the cell phone can pollute up to 132,000 liters of drinking water. Donations may be tax deductible. All cell phones and inkjet cartridges are accepted and can be donated at the Roanoke Rapids High School Office, 800 Hamilton St.
Garysburg Christmas Parade
The town of Garysburg is now accepting entries for the annual Christmas parade to be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 13.
Any civic, church group, school, business, antique car or tractor are encouraged to participate. Bands floats, classic cars, motorcycles, horses, homecoming courts, fire trucks, etc., are welcomed.

Stroke and osteoporosis screening
Residents living in and around the Roanoke Rapids community can be screened to reduce their risk of having a stroke. The complete screening package now includes a new heart rhythm screening, checking for irregular heartbeat, which is a major risk factor for stroke. These classes will be $10 for residents and $20 for non-residents.

Family of the Year contest
The Northampton County Rotary Club will sponsor a Family of the Year contest as part of its Empower the Family project. Churches and other organizations may nominate a family in their community. From the nominations, a 2008 Family of the Year will be chosen and awarded $200 and a plaque. Bus trip to Charlotte
A bus trip to Charlotte for the Great Southern Christmas Show at the Charlotte Merchandise Mart is planned for Nov. 14-15. There are six acres of shopping, crafts, food sampling and entertainment. The trip also includes a 2 -1/2 hour dinner cruise around Lake Norman. On Saturday a trip to the Concord Mill Outlet is planned, and the last stop will be the Billy Graham library tour. Emergency food assistance
Northampton County residents who are low or fixed income may qualify to receive food given out at the Big Heart Pantry located at Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 1408 River Road, Henrico. Eligibility is determined on income or emergency need. For assistance, applicants may apply from 10 a.m. until noon on Saturdays, at Cedar Grove.
African-American Festival
The 11th annual African-American Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, at Hertford County Middle School in Murfreesboro. The N.C. Department of Correction will have a job fair; free screenings will be provided by the Moble Health Clinic; entertainment featuring a step show, praise dancing, college bands and high school bands. Veterans Day program
On Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11, the Joint Veterans Committee will gather at 11 a.m., at the veterans memorial at Jack Laughery Park in Rocky Mount to show support for all veterans. Numerous honor guards will take part and the Honorable Mayor David Combs and a surprise military guest will give remarks.

Angel Food Ministries
New Life Church of Christ, 1718 E.10th St., Roanoke Rapids (behind Cinema Theater) will host Angel Food Ministries — “A Food Ministry with a Servant’s Heart”
This is a nationwide non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing monthly grocery relief to communities throughout the United States. Anyone may participate. The grocery units are sold at $30 each. Each month has a different menu. Generally one unit of food assists in feeding a family of four for several meals. The next order will go off Nov. 7. Caregiver Support Program meeting
The Halifax County Family Caregiver Support Program will hold a support group meeting at 12:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the Enfield Municipal Building, at 200 Whitfield St., Enfield. The speaker will be Lonnie Hedgepeth from the Halifax County Council on Aging.
A famly caregiver is a person of any age (friend, neighbor, etc.) proving care for a senior adult 60 or over, or providing care ofr a person with Alzheimer’s Disease, regardless of their age; an individual, age 55 or oder, that is raising a relative child under the age of 18; or a relative caregiver of adult children with MR/DD (ages 19-59).

E.V. Rally set for Nov. 7-8
The 12th annual Electric Vehicle Rally will be held Nov. 7-8, at Northampton County High School-East. There will a circuit event, autocross, trouble-shooting, pit crew competition and a range event. The Halifax County Health Department will offer flu shots from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, at the Halifax Clinic, excluding holidays, while supplies last.

Operation Christmas Stocking
The State Employee’s Credit Union District 34 will hold its fourth year of Operation Christmas Stocking, Support Our Troops. Help make this the best Christmas Holiday ever for our deployed men and women serving overseas by stuffing a Christmas stocking to send to them. All items must fit into the stocking. Please slip stitch to top close and keep contents from falling during shipping. Trip to Charleston planned
A chartered bus trip with the Sunshine Travel Club to Charleston, S.C., is planned for Dec. 5-7. The trip will include a tour of one of America’s oldest working plantations, tour of Charleston, dinner and cruise on the Spirit of Carolina. Northampton County High School-East Class of 1974 is making plans to have a class reunion. If you are a graduate or know someone who is, please call or have them call (252) 585-1438 or (252) 287-2902. Identify yourself as a 1974 graduate, leave a name and number and someone will get back with you. A planning meeting will be scheduled once responses are received. A class officer is needed to help with the planning, however, the planning team will not be limited to the class officers.

Garysburg Youth Center
The Garysburg Youth Center, on Highway 186 in Garysburg, is now open to school-aged children in Northampton County for $20 per month. The hours of operation are 3:15 to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Applications are still being accepted.

Hobgood Clinic
The Hobgood Clinic, a free diabetes testing and education center run by medical students at East Carolina University, meets at 8:30 a.m., the first and second Saturday of every month, at the Thomas Shields Community Center in Hobgood. Visitors can have their body mass index, blood pressure and blood glucose levels checked, free of charge. For more information, call (252) 744-3182.
Fundraiser for Kelly Singh
The Roanoke Valley Lake Gaston Board of REALTORS are holding a fundraiser for Kelly Singh, who was diagnosed this spring with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and has no insurance. She has served on the board as president for two years and on the board for more than seven years in various other positions. She is also a volunteer for Crime Stoppers, The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of America, RRHS Band Boosters, The Odessa of the Minds, and has led the youth (EYC) of All Saints’ Episcopal Church as well as many other organizations in the community. The board is selling raffle tickets for two $250 gas cards for two for $5 and can be purchased at All Saints' church office, Wilkie Real Estate in Roanoke Rapids and on the Lake, Strickland Real Estate office, Collier Harley Davidson, or one of the realtors. Hannah’s Closet to hold sale
Hannah’s Closet, 258 Roanoke Ave., will hold a fall harvest sale featuring three bags of clothes for $5. Store hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Donations are accepted and Hannah’s will offer a tax deductible receipt. Donations are taken all day Monday through Saturday. Hannah’s also accepts household items, furniture, clothing, ladies, men’s and children’s cloths, shoes, handbags, used cell phones and jewelry. Items should be cleaned and gently used. All donations are greatly appreciated and Hannah’s thanks everyone for their continued support.
Jackson Christmas Parade
Come join us Saturday, Dec. 13 at 1 p.m., for the annual Jackson Christmas Parade sponsored by the Jackson Women's Club! Food, festivities, and fun!!! Oh, Santa Claus too!!!
