ROANOKE RAPIDS — There is no official word on why work apparently has stopped on the Farm Fresh project off Premier Boulevard.

Speculation, Roanoke Rapids Planning and Development Director George Gurley said Thursday, was that it may be because of the economy and construction is to continue at the beginning of the year.

One Farm Fresh official who didn’t want his name used said the company was reevaluating how it wanted to do its retail space.

Eleven new business spaces are connected to the store space, according to plans the company submitted to the city.

A formal request for information to the company’s community relations department was answered with the assurances that the Daily Herald’s questions had been passed to the company president. The newspaper then received an e-mail from the company’s communications director saying there would be no official announcement or explanation at the present time.

Tommy McKnight, Employment Security Commission Roanoke Rapids manager, said it was his understanding the chain has several stores already under construction and is trying to work on those.

The new grocery store and shop spaces are being built next to Collier Harley-Davidson at Premier Landing and will serve as an anchor for that development, much like Belk is serving as an anchor for the first phase of Premier Landing, city officials have said.
