WELDON — U.S. Congressman G.K. Butterfield says President-elect Barack Obama is picking a cabinet “of excellence” which will serve “with exemplary and visionary leadership.”

Butterfield made his comments in a brief interview following a ceremony naming the Weldon Post Office in honor of Town Commissioner Dock Brown.

“He can’t solve every problem in the first year,” Butterfield said of Obama. “He’s going to begin aggressively in January to improve the American image and enforce PAYGO rules.”

PAYGO (means pay as you go) applied to the federal budget means that spending or tax changes don’t add to the federal deficit.

One of the goals in the first 100 days is to get all children insured, Butterfield. “By the end of the first term we want everyone insured.”

Another priority will be balancing the budget and not raising taxes on the middle class. “We want to redeploy troops from Iraq in 12 to 15 months. That will start day one of the Obama administration,” said Butterfield.

Butterfield said Washington is hesitant to give the U.S. auto industry a $25 billion bailout, something that will be discussed tomorrow. “We’re concerned the auto industry doesn’t have a plan,” he said. “They want $25 billion as operating capital. We’re issuing a challenge to GM— we want to see a plan.”

The congressman says management needs to sit down with the union and work out a plan. “Like us, they have to balance their budget. Labor needs to work with them.”
