Crime?
I live in Lincoln Heights … Where are the sheriff’s officers. We have drug and crime problems … We need more patrols.

Rude

This is to the state trooper who stopped me last week … He was ugly and rude … I pray that the other troopers aren’t like him … I hope they understand how people who are stopped could be having a bad day, too.

Black and white

I am offended that people have forgotten that Barack Obama is part white … He is not just a black man. His mother was a white woman. He represents not only the black community, but the white community as well.

Teens

I can’t believe how rude some teenagers can be … The other night I was in Wal-Mart and I saw a woman come in who was obviously being treated for cancer judging from her hair and appearance … These teenagers, young black and white, girls and boys were calling her names and making fun of her  … I can’t believe teenagers don’t have anything to do but hang around and insult people who have problems …

Anger

In response to venom, two wrongs don’t make a right. Stop being so angry.

Bonuses

Regarding bonuses: Perhaps the people are hard working and dedicated … I am sure they are but the point is that there are lots of people losing their jobs because of the economic conditions we find ourselves in … Cities much bigger than Roanoke Rapids — New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia are not only cutting back on salaries, they are laying off. … All I am saying is that in this time of economic stress, bonuses should not be given whether you cut taxes or not. Has anyone ever heard of a rainy day fund? Does everyone spend all the money they have or make?

Insensitive

To the person complaining about the person complimenting the officer who helped her, you have really got a problem … You are insensitive but God bless you anyway.

Appropriate

I think the punishment is appropriate for the football player who hit the other …

Skin deep

I would like to make a comment about Barack Obama being the first black president… What is the point, God made us all? … Color is only skin deep … underneath we are all the same.

Why?

Good grief, do people have to call in to Sound off! every time a police officer stops to help them change a tire, or assist them in any other kind of roadside troubles they might have? Is not that part of police officers’ creed (To Serve and Protect)? Also, would you call into Sound off! if an average every day man had stopped to change your tire? So why you are calling in to say “Thanks?” I say “No Thanks” to reading about it in Sound off! Now if a police officer protected your home from a burglar, or saved your life, then yes, that would be worthy to Sound off! about.

Praise for the museum

The Military Museum at Becker Village Mall is excellent. I think everyone who can should visit it especially the public, private and Christian school students and teachers. The teachers should sharpen their knowledge as to how we keep our freedoms before taking their students. How can they learn if they have no teacher? Mr. Dallas Jones and his helpers have done a magnificent job in putting the museum together. There is  no admission charge. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., five days a week. This is a real asset to our ailing community. I salute Mr. Jones for his hard work and leadership.

Bonuses

This is in response to the person who complained that no city employees should get bonuses or pay raises. First of all, the current budget is set so if council finds the money to grant bonuses this Christmas then it wouldn’t affect your tax rate at all. Secondly, if you feel they don’t deserve bonuses or raises that is your opinion. I am sure, however, that your garbage gets picked up on time, your streets are paved, the police and firemen are there when you call them to protect your home and family, Your kids have many safe sports programs and parks. We are all in tough economic times and these dedicated employees work rain or shine to deliver these services and most of them are underpaid as it is. Good employees need to be rewarded for jobs well done.

Referees

I’m appalled to think we pay good money for referees to call unfair penalties. I was at the midget football game and viewed the video. Repeated flags were thrown for unjustified reasons and flags were not thrown when they needed to be.  Referees, you need to get your act together.

More on the refs

Apparently the referees at the Midget League playoff games were oblivious to the fact a professional videographer was recording the game.  It was obvious inappropriate penalties were called throughout the entire game. If a referee has a personal vendetta against a coach, don’t take it out on the players. Yellow Jackets, you played an awesome game and you are all winners!

And a bit more

This message is in response to those parents crying about the Roanoke Rapids -Halifax Academy midget football game.  The referees did not make any of the tackles or touchdowns in the game.  They most certainly did not make the two interceptions that decided the game — one forcing the overtime and the other that won the game.  The referees did not throw the coaches out of the game, because for some reason they were still there until the end under a bombardment of flags further destroying their team’s hopes of a victory.  We should teach our children sportsmanship, not how to cuss out a referee in the parking lot.

Kerosene prices

I don’t know why kerosene is selling for $3.899 per gallon when the price of crude oil is less than $60 a barrel, other than the fact the oil companies or the retailer are gouging the poor people who depend on kerosene to heat their homes during the winter. I think the governor should investigate this along with the price of gasoline.

Football players

The article in Monday’s paper in on the two Roanoke Rapids football players was good, but you failed to mention that both boys were pushing but only one boy was taken off the team. The other had senior pictures taken, participated in Senior Night, traveled with the team and will receive his senior plaque. Michael Shearin was denied all these things. Both boys were at fault but they were not treated equally.

Veterans

I would like to give a heartfelt thank you to all the veterans in the Valley and around the country. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

WZRU

I would like to know what they did to WZRU? I was enjoying the old music and now it’s religion. I am sure the northerners around here would rather listen to the old music than another religious station.
