ROANOKE RAPIDS — Mr. Lewis M. Garner, 70, of 130 Morgan Drive, Roanoke Rapids, died Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, at his residence following a brief illness.

Lewis was born in Halifax County and was the son of the late Edward J. Garner and Eleanor Taylor Garner. He formerly served in the United States Navy and was a truck driver in the logging industry.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Dorothy King Garner of the home; three daughters, Laura Garner of Norfolk, Va., Mary Bethel and her husband, Edward, of Ahoskie and Olivia Garner of Roanoke Rapids; one son, Lewis M. Garner Jr. of Norfolk; two stepsons, Kevin and Kerry Griffin and his fiancée, Carol Rockwell, of Roanoke Rapids; one brother, Thomas Earl Garner and his wife, Christine, of Gaston; one sister, Betty Garner of Roanoke Rapids; his grandchildren, Jordan Garner, Maggie Garner, Aaron Garner, Joey Spillane, Alyssa Daniels, Jalyn Daniels, Madelyn Bethel, Danielle Griffin, Jessica Hanson and Tyler Faircloth; and one great-grandson, Brantley Jenkins.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m., today, Nov. 12, at Wrenn, Clarke & Hagan Funeral and Cremation Service in Roanoke Rapids, which is handling the arrangements.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 13, in the chapel of the funeral home, with Annie Marie Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.
