Religious freedom

Regarding the gentleman who was requested to remove his turban at the Union Mission. This country was founded on a Constitution that guarantees freedom of religion. I hope the Union Mission does not get federal funding because if they are going to be so closed minded toward people of other religions they should not be getting federal funding.

Obama

If the American people and the American companies have so much confidence in president-elect Obama’s tax and initiative plans, why does the stock market continue to go down?

Concern over accidents

Out of concern for several accidents that have already occurred at Becker Drive and Old Farm Road, I am asking all motorists to please use their turn signals so that oncoming vehicles know what you are going to do and then be courteous enough to move into the appropriate lane so that others can turn also. It would make this intersection run a lot smoother if we all drove the way we are supposed to. Thank you for your time and thank you for anyone who makes that effort to make that corner more safe.

Appalling

I was very appalled that the Union Mission would not accept a contribution from Gary Khera because of his turban. I can understand his point of view for wanting him to take his turban off but they should respect his religious beliefs. I was very upset with the Mission’s actions.

Find another charity

I would like to respond to the article concerning Gary Khera’s donation. Mr. Khera there are plenty of other not-for-profit organizations in the community that would be more than happy to accept any donation you would choose to give. I too have had problems donating to the Union Mission and now have scratched them off of our list because of the attitude. We have sought and found many other charitable donations that are more than happy to accept any contribution.

If there were a fire

If the Union Mission were on fire would they make the firefighters take their helmets off before they go inside?

Not a ball cap

The turban is not like wearing a ball cap. It’s part of his way of life. He was being nice enough to want to help people … They should have treated him better.

The world

The preacher from the Union Mission pleads for money then won’t take the man’s money or shake his hand — What’s the world coming to?

Respect

I was very upset to learn that the Union Mission turned down Mr. Khera’s offer of a donation just because he was wearing a turban. They should respect his religion even if they don’t agree with it.

Sickening

I was shocked and hurt when I read the article about the man trying to make a donation to the Union Mission and not being able to because he would not remove his turban. This is sickening at the time of the year when people need help.

Adam and Steve

On same-sex marriages, God made Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve. Has anyone thought that is why California is burning off the map because they have had gay marriages … God has destroyed one city because of homosexuality … Just look in the Bible folks.

Ask forgiveness

The unfortunate incident at the Union Mission involving the Christian and the Sikh exemplifies the unbecoming attitude of some Christians today. I learned as an adult that when I have hurt the feelings or dignity of my fellow man, it is my responsibility to promptly admit by wrong, and humbly ask his pardon and then go to my God and ask for forgiveness.

What does a headcover matter?

Donations are donations. This man was helping those that needed help and the Mission had the nerve to reject his donation that would have helped a family in need have Thanksgiving dinner. How dare you deny a family because of a turban. Was it dollar bills or some kind of explosive device wrapped in dollar bills, give me a break. How naive are you. You are a missionary and you have no idea or knowledge of other faiths and their beliefs, open your eyes there is one God, but many faiths. You much recognize them all, how naive are you, Rev. Weeks. One other thing, who will give to this family who was denied his gift. What do you mean by headcover? What does a damn headcovering have to do with a monetary donation?

Gas prices

We appreciate the reduction in the gas prices but why is that when we get one problem some where else and you find the gas prices go up here … There is no way that can affect the price at the pumps that quickly … It is all in the head.

Asphalt?

On the bridge that it was paved over between Gaston and Roanoke Rapids … Why did they use asphalt? That is the first bridge I know of that has tar on it. That bridge is going to be an ice rink when we get really cold and bad weather.

Parade

The person complaining about the Roanoke Rapids Christmas Parade being staged on a Saturday needs to get a life. Stop complaining that you aren’t getting what you want. Just be glad you are not getting what you deserve.

Cheers for Weeks

Regarding the incident at the Union Mission: I agree 110 percent with Rev. Weeks.

More on Weeks

There is nothing wrong with what Pastor Weeks did … and if they don’t want to give their money I am sure they won’t miss it because God will provide for a place for God and a man of God.

Disturbing

It disturbs me to see any religion to use its rules to justify discriminating against people of other religions. In the Union Mission case, do they really believe this passes the “What would Jesus do test?

Deer hunters

There should be a law requiring deer hunters to get all their dogs penned up at night … They should not be allowed to run chasing deer into the paths of cars  … It’s really dangerous and needs to be stopped.

Shame

The people of the Union Mission should be ashamed for turning away a man because of his headgear or religion. There are 50 or 60 churches in Roanoke Rapids and I doubt there are any others that would turn away anyone for that reason.

Bush’s problem

Would the person who left the comment on Obama in Sunday’s newspaper please do their research. We are fixing eight years of George Bush and his finances. You cannot blame it on the president-elect who is just getting started.  The stock market will probably continue going down for the next few months.

The devil did it

I am calling in reference to the Union Mission controversy. He was doing his Christian duty regardless of what his religion is … He was making a donation because he knew the Union Mission was in need … It was the devil’s work that kept the Union Mission from accepting the donation. I don’t blame the man; I blame the Union Mission.

Not Obama’s fault

To the person blaming Obama for the stock market: Why are you blaming Obama for something that Bush did.

Praise for hospital

I spent nine days on the fifth floor of the hospital and I would like to thank all the great doctors and nurses there. Every time you needed something they were there and they always had a smile on their face.

Give Obama a chance

Give Obama a chance … He’s not in the seat yet … What happened wasn’t his fault …

Disrespect

Mr. Khera you are the one who disrespects the Christian faith by refusing to take off your headgear …

Uncordial

What a pity for someone to represent the Union Mission and not be cordial to other religions.

Creating trouble?

Why did Mr. Khera decide to make his donation in person this year? Was it to create a controversy?
