The Roanoke Rapids High School Show Choir presents '50s Santa Sock Hop, a short musical revue, on Thursday, Dec. 4 @ 6 p.m. @ Andy's Cheesesteaks. Ten percent of all sales will go as a donation to the RRHS Choirs.

Jackson Tree Lighting

The Town of Jackson will hold its annual tree lighting ceremony @ 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5, on the Historic Courthouse Square. Activities include the tree lighting, illumination of the town, caroling, violin player, wassail, hot chocolate, holiday cookies, firepit, outdoor showing of “A Christmas Carol” on a wide-screen TV, visit from Santa and horse-drawn carriage rides through the historic district.

‘12 Days of Christmas’ @ Sylvan Heights

Sylvan Heights Waterfowl Park & Eco-Center in Scotland Neck continues with its “12 Days of Christmas” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., through Wednesday, Dec. 24. Christmas Acoustic Jam

First Friday Acoustic Jam Christmas program will be @ 7 p.m., Friday, at Halifax Community College, Room 108. Featured will be area bluegrass bands and pickers, so if you play guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle, dobro or bass, come out and join the group. For information, call (252) 586-3878.

Gaston Tree Lighting & Parade

The Town of Gaston will hold its annual Christmas tree lighting @ 6:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5, at the town hall, 223 Craige St. Refreshments will follow at the E. E. Odom Center. The Christmas parade will be @ 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 7. For an entry form and information, call (252) 537-1046. The grand marshall will be Louise Bailey, Town Mayor Pro Tem/Commissioner, former commander of the Gaston Rescue Squad, who currently serves as the squad’s treasurer. She is well known for her community support.

Christmas Bazaar

Roanoke Rapids Christmas Parade

The 2008 Roanoke Rapids Christmas Parade, presented by the Halifax County Arts Council, will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6.  This year’s theme is “Winter Wonderland.”  For information, call (252) 532-2571 or visit www.halifaxarts.com.

Seaboard Christmas Parade

The Town of Seaboard will hold its annual Christmas parade @ 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6. The line up will be @ 12:45 p.m. The tree lighting ceremony will be held @ 5:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 5. The theme will be “A Celebration of Love, Joy and Peace Within Our Community.” There will be a drop off for anyone who wishes to bring non-perishable can goods for needy families.

Rich Square Christmas Parade

Members of the Rich Square Community Club are accepting participants in the annual Rich Square Christmas Parade, to be held @ 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 6. Line-up for participants will begin at 9 a.m., at the CADA facility on Highway 258 North, and disassemble at Rich Square-Creecy Elementary School. Lunch & Story Time

The Gasburg Volunteer Fire Department and Ladies Auxiliary will host a lunch and story time with Santa from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6, @ the firehouse, located at 1705 Baird St., Gasburg, Va. Lunch is $4 per person and pictures are $5 per person. Lunch will consist of Domino’s pizza, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, chips, dessert and a beverage.  There will be several activities for the kids to do while awaiting the arrival of Santa. Prelude to Christmas

Visit historic Warrenton and enjoy the Christmas spirit during the second annual Prelude to Christmas from 5 to 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Courthouse Square, downtown Warrenton. The event will include carriage rides, music, face painting, a gingerbread house contest, lighting of a community Christmas tree and visits with Santa in the new Santa House. Scotland Neck’s 5th Annual Christmas on the Commons will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m., Sunday, Dec 7. This is a community event held on the Town Commons with Christmas carols, holiday treats and a visit from Santa Claus. Collecting Toys

Alan Vester Nissan, in conjunction with the Halifax County Department of Social Services, will collect new unwrapped toys for foster care and underprivileged children. Day Trip @ Edenton

The Adventurers of Lake Gaston are planning a day trip Friday, Dec.12, to the Christmas Home Tour at Edenton. Cost of the trip is $58, which includes a luxury motor coach, tickets to the Home Tour, lunch at Golden Coral and tip for the bus driver. Christmas Musical

The Creative Arts and Music Ministries of Lake Gaston Christian Life Centre, Ebony, Va., will present four performances of a new Christmas musical Dec. 12-14. Performances begin at 7 p.m. each night with a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee. The musical, titled “Bethlehem’s Hope,” incorporates music, drama, comedy, dance and inspirational testimonies from a cast of 75. The audience will laugh, cry and be challenged to understand the true meaning of the coming of Jesus. Free tickets, which will hold your seat until 15 minutes before the play begins, are available by calling the church office at (434) 636-5504. David R. Lively, senior pastor, and Dale W. Baird, who wrote and compiled the musical, invite the public to attend this unusual celebration of the season. ‘A Christmas Carol’

Calling Angels will sponsor its annual Broadway Christmas play, “A Christmas Carol,” based upon Charles Dickens classic at 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13, at the William R. Davie Middle School Auditorium. Volunteers will be calling the community, offering sponsorship packages to attend the event. Proceeds will benefit foster children in the Roanoke Valley by providing them with warm winter clothing and a Christmas gift. There will be door prizes for those attending, which are donated by area businesses. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $8 by calling (252) 535-2508, (252) 532-6522 or (252) 532-5056. Tickets will be sold on the day of the show for $10.

Garysburg Christmas Parade & Tree Lighting

The town of Garysburg is accepting entries for the annual Christmas parade to be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 13. Any civic, church group, school, business, antique car or tractor are encouraged to participate. Bands, floats, classic cars, motorcycles, horses, homecoming courts, fire trucks, etc., are welcome. Call the town hall from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., at 536-2167, for entry forms or information. Deadline for entries is Thursday, Dec. 11. The town of Garysburg along with the women’s fellowship of Roanoke Salem Baptist Church will hold its annual tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m., Friday, Dec. 12. Christmas carols will be sung and refreshments will be served following the lighting.

Christmas in Halifax

The Town of Halifax is seeking participants for its annual Christmas parade, which will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13, along King Street, in conjunction with the other events of “Christmas in Halifax.” There is no charge to participate in the parade. Area civic groups, bands, horse groups and other interested individuals are encouraged to decorate in the holiday theme and take part in this wonderful family experience. Events for the Christmas in Halifax include: Revolutionary encampment at the Tap Room Tavern with living history activities from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; soup and sandwich luncheon at Halifax United Methodist Church on King Street from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; hot cider and cookies, crafts show and sale, holiday cooking demonstration in the Visitor Center at 25 Saint David St., from noon until 4 p.m.; Christmas tea hosted by the Halifax Garden Club at Eugenia House, 127 S. Dobbs St., from 1 to 3 p.m.; and the Visitor Center Open will offer tours of historic buildings from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Guided and self-guided tours are also available.

Music Jubilee

Jackson Christmas Parade

Come to Jackson at 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13, for the annual Jackson Christmas Parade sponsored by the Jackson Women’s Club. There will be food, festivities, fun and Santa Claus, too.  Any civic, church, school, business or organization is invited to participate. Christmas on the Canal

The Roanoke Canal Museum will host Christmas on the Canal, a day of food, fun, and music for the entire family, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 13. “The Polar Express” is the theme.  Musical entertainers such as Chambergrass, Pastor David Smith, the Roanoke Rapids High School Jazz Ensemble and the Chaloner Middle School Jingle Bell Jackets are all welcomed favorites and play holiday songs throughout the day.  Museum staff will serve homemade Christmas cookies, candies and treats made especially for the event by volunteers.  At noon, kids of all ages are invited to frost and decorate their own cookies and watch a favorite Christmas classic.  Admission is free.  Donations are accepted for take-home bags of holiday treats. Christmas in the Park

Christmas in the Park will be held from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 14, at Centennial Park, corner of 7th Street and Roanoke Avenue. Featured will be Santa, wagon rides, tours of the smoke house, baked goods, chili for sale by the Roanoke Rapids Fireman’s Club, crafts for sale by the Roanoke Valley Senior Citizens Association, entertainment, and craft projects for children.

Julie’s Taps & Tutus

There is always dancing, singing and a generous dose of holiday humor when Julie’s students “strut their stuff” on the state of The Lakeland Theatre Company. Great costumes, great music and guest soloists make this a community event not to be missed.  The show will be held at 8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 18. Christmas Concert

The Boys and Girls Club of Halifax County will hold its second annual brunswick stew sale on Friday, Dec. 12. Pickup up until noon will be at First Christian Church, 836 Roanoke Ave., Roanoke Rapids. Holiday Celebration

The management and staff of H.D. Pope Funeral Home will host its 6th annual holiday celebration from 6 p.m. until midnight, Saturday, Dec. 27, at the Dunn Center on the campus of North Carolina Wesleyan College in Roanoke Rapids. The evening will begin with gospel performances from 6 to 8 pm., with other musical entertainment from 8 p.m. until midnight. The public is invited, free of charge, as a way to say thank you.
