Sound Off!

It’s not Bush’s fault

George Bush contrary belief is not responsible for every downfall of America. We are paying for bad decisions made by a Democratic Congress and a Democratic president … The bad loans were made in the late 90s and signed into law by Bill Clinton not George Bush. It sounds to me the people reading Sound off! need to do their homework …

Payoff?

I see George Bush is leaving the White House and giving his friends bonuses with taxpayer dollars.

Unneeded help

Social Services has helped a lot of people who really didn’t need help …

Not above the law

If you think you are above the law, change your ways for God will punish you … You know who you are … I stand by the Union Mission. If people can’t obey the rules let them go elsewhere with their donation.

Going elsewhere

I wanted the Union Mission to know I have two bags full of clothes that I thought they could use but since they adopted this attitude, I am taking my clothes to the Union Mission in Emporia, Va.

Weeks wrong

It is wrong of Rev. Weeks to turn away the man who came to help.

Let the wife do it

The controversy at the Union Mission could have been solved if the man had allowed his wife to go in … You just needed to use a little wisdom.

Blame Congress

Why does everyone keep blaming the Bush administration when Congress had more to do with our troubles than anyone?

Why so picky

While the Union Mission church is turning away donations, it's not as bad as another church that just plain locks the people out. Me and my wife had to leave a Becker Drive church after finding all the front doors locked on Sunday morning. Not only did this make us feel very unwelcome, but it can't be safe. How about it Mr. Fire Marshal is it safe to lock church doors during services? Mr. preacher, you got them pews so full you don't need any more visitors? When you get so picky that you turn away donations and lock people out, no wonder people stop going to church. Amen.

Dumbing down America

Mr. Cal Thomas indicates that according to the Intercollegiate Studies Institute that a large number of Americans have a civic literacy deficit. This is absolutely correct. The ISI says ( and Mr. Thomas iterates) that a random sample of 2,508 adults revealed that there is not much difference between the uneducated and the highly educated. Mr. Thomas goes on to say that the senior class at Harvard scored a 69.56 on the test  or a D-plus! When I was in college a 69.56 was a flat-out F! If we scored a 74 it was an E. If we scored a 73, that was an F.

I think part of the problem today is that it is too easy to get a good grade based on values of testing.

I didn't know it at the time but I graduated summa cum laude in 1957 … at least magna cum laude. Some people think cum laude these days is something special, but it's not. When I was in college, we went to class six days per week. And our scores meant something. I think the education system in this country has contributed  substantially to the lack of educated teachers, principals, administrators, professors, deans, If we have no educated teachers, how can the students learn. In my humble opinion, a recent bachelors degree doesn't mean much. Our political leaders thrive on ignorance. Theirs and the general population!

Also, I think Mr. Khera went to the Union Mission to create a controversy. He succeeded beyond his wildest dreams in my humble opinion.

    " Union Mission
Is the Union Mission a private or public service? If private, surely there must be an area where the public can drop off donations. If the entire building is considered a Church, surely there are more rules than removing head gear. I believe an apology is in order and educate the public what is your objective. "

" To the person who says the it is not Bush's fault I have this to say. Sure, it may not be all his fault, but the war that has been ongoing now is costing tax payers dollars. In fact I belive the figure is up into the trillions. Personally, I don't see how he and Cheney avoided impeachment. "

" Democratic Congress in late 90's? It may come as a surprise to you that the Republicans controlled both houses of congress from 1994 to 2006.

Bush led an all out assault on the environment during his reign in the White House, sanctioned torture of prisoners in violation of the Geneva Convention, pushed hard against any attempts to require auto manufacturers to improve fuel efficiencies, did nothing to ween the country off of fossil fuels, politicized the Justice Dept, authorized the violations of civil liberties by wiring tapping of phone conversations without probable cause, diverted much needed troops from Afghanistan to wage HIS war in Iraq all while misleading the country to the real reasons for attacking Iraq, oil, oil, oil.
