Squire Students Show Off Recycling Projects during Superintendent’s Visit

The first-grade class of Marilyn Burgess at Squire Elementary school shared their knowledge of recycling with Northampton County Schools’ superintendent Dr. Eric C. Bracy during a recent visit. Burgess’ class was selected by the principal, Felisha Wyche, as the “Superintendent’s Star Class of the Month” for November.

 As with each of the 10-Star Classes of the month, Bracy visited with Burgess’ class to see the extraordinary techniques and strategies utilized by the teacher of the star class in action and found them presenting their recycling projects.

Burgess asked the students to create something new from something old at home and bring it in to share with the class.  The assignment coincides with North Carolina Standard Course of Study Science Objective 5.05: The learner will demonstrate responsibility for the care and management of the environment within the school and community.

The recycling creations included a boat, a birdhouse, a Halloween basket of items to recycle, a guitar, a collage, maracas, violin, a picture frame and a model of Sponge Bob Square Pants. Students utilized the following products for their creations: Fishing line, paper plates, a Frisbee, cereal boxes, styrofoam, pennies, cotton balls, markers, a potato sack, a juice carton, a sock, yarn, bird seed, dental floss, a

DVD holder, egg cartons, cans, water bottles, newspapers, poster board, candy, rubber bands, pencils, and beads and aluminum foil.
