LAKE GASTON — The scene found by police and rescuers was horrendous and left many amazed that no one had been killed in the violent collision that left a Dodge Neon a mangled heap of metal.

That’s what Virginia State Police and a conglomeration of fire and rescue units around Lake Gaston found when they responded to a head-on collision on Elams Road near the Virginia/North Carolina border yesterday.

Trooper Rob Campbell said a red Neon driven by Jose Antonio Lara, 20, of Broadnax, Va. was traveling south on Elams Road when he lost control of his vehicle.

In the other lane Jerry Jones, 54, of LaCrosse was traveling north in a Parker Oil truck. Jones, an employee of Parker Oil in South Hill, Va., tried to avoid hitting Lara, but the two vehicles collided head-on. According to Campbell, the oil truck struck and drove over the top of the Neon.

Debris from the wreck was strewn more than 150 feet down the highway. The motor completely separated from the Neon and lay in a heap in the ditch, while the chassis was twisted and folded into something that no longer resembled a car.

The truck’s wheels were folded like a napkin beneath it and huge sheets of gnarled red metal left gaping wounds in what use to be the grill and carriage. Jones received no physical injuries, and was at the scene.

Rescue crews said that Lara was pinned in the Neon when they arrived. Cory Lett, of the Ebony Volunteer Fire Department, was the first to the scene. He said that it took members from Ebony, Brunswick Rescue, Central Rescue, Roanoke Wildwood VFD, the Gasburg VFD and the Virginia Department of Transportation to remove Lara from the vehicle.

Lett said when he got to the scene Lara was not wearing a seat belt. Amazingly, Lara received only broken bones, but no life threatening injuries. He was transported to Community Memorial Healthcare Center in South Hill, Va. “All the help was appreciated,” said Lett.

" It's hard to say who was at fault in this accident, the young man in the neon has no recollection of the accident and the driver of the truck of course will never say he himself was at fault. Lets not place blame on speed and being on the wrong side of the road, there is no proof of what happened. We should only thank God that both of them survived the crash. I also thank all who assisted with this accident. "

" I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all that helped my son Jose` Lara at the scene of the accident, at the hospital, on the helicopter as well as in MCV Hospital. He is currently in ICU at MCV Hospitals in Richmond Va., He has undergone one surgery and on Monday will undergo yet another surgery. With the help of the good Lord my son will survive. "

" That was unlike anything I have even seen nor hope to ever see again. It is unbeleivable to me that the drive of the Neon was not killed, let alone the Propane truck drive, truly makes me beleive in miracles. Kudos to ALL of the people that worked at the horrific accident scene. Fire,EMS, police, state highway personel, newspeople, concerned neighbors and anyone else who helped with the wreck. Thank God that everyone survived. Thanks for quick responses. That is a bad curve and maybe now people will stay on their side of the road and drive the speed limit. "
