Roanoke Rapids city manager gets no raise

ROANOKE RAPIDS — City Manager Phyllis Lee received an overall good evaluation by City Council Tuesday night.

Council met in closed session for nearly two hours to evaluate the city manager.

By the time council finished the evaluation Lee had left and the city clerk had left.

Returning to open session, Mayor Drewery Beale said City Attorney Gilbert Chichester would issue a statement this morning on the results of the evaluation.

He declined to go into specifics and would only say noone would be fired and emphasized the city attorney would fax a statement in the morning.

The statement is as follows: “The City Manager is employed by the City of Roanoke Rapids pursuant to a written contract of employment. The contract requires Council to evaluate the performance of the City Manager in February of each year. On Feb. 10, 2009, Council discussed and completed its evaluation of the City Manager. The evaluation was overall good. There were concerns that were discussed. There will not be any salary increase or bonus awarded to the Manager this year.”

Chichester said the reason no comment was made following the meeting last night was because council wanted to notify Lee of the results.
