Weldon-Seaboard Alumni Chapter update

JACKSON — The Weldon-Seaboard Alumni Chapter held its monthly meeting at Burnett’s Diner and welcomed special guest Carol Holloway, Shaw University National Alumni Association regional vice-president, and Jean Bell Avent, chapter queen of the Raleigh-Wake chapter. Avent is a native of Garysburg who currently lives in the Raleigh area. Holloway provided updates on the activities of the National Alumni Association and addressed questions from the local alumni.

During the meeting, special recognition was given to Wendell Edwards who was recently inducted into The North Carolina Transportation Hall of Fame.

Edwards is a 1993 graduate of Shaw University and member of the Weldon-Seaboard Chapter. The induction into the Hall of Fame recognized Edwards for his many years of service and accomplishments, including executive director of the Choanoke Public Transportation Authority in Rich Square from 1983-2007.

Under his direction, the Choanoke Public Transportation Authority became a charter member of the North Carolina Public Transportation Association. He served five terms on the board of directors from 1983 until 1990 and as president from 1988-1990.

He is active in many community and civic organizations and is a charter member of the Northampton Chamber of Commerce,  The Northampton County Museum Board of Directors, the Northampton County Historic Commission, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and Northampton County Rotary Club.

Edwards is the recipient of the Governor’s Public Transportation Award, the Federal Transit Administration’s Outstanding Service Award and the North Carolina Department of Transportation Extra Mile Award.

The Weldon-Seaboard Alumni Chapter meets every fourth Saturday and is currently preparing  for the annual Shaw Day Service set for 3 p.m., Sunday, March 15, at Faithful Band Baptist Church in Pleasant Hill. The Rev. Gregory Evans is pastor and will provide the message. For information about the chapter contact John R. Jones at 589-1133.
