The evening featured a  performance by Marcus Johnson, internationally acclaimed jazz keyboardist, composer and producer. GBDF’s officers and board members were excited about having Johnson come to eastern North Carolina to perform at this annual fundraising event where he received an overwhelming response from the audience.

Patricia Peele of Roanoke Rapids sent an e-mail to GBDF that read, “Thank you all for a wonderful evening! My guests and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening of jazz, food, fellowship and fun! Thanks so much for bringing Marcus to our area. He is a wonderful young man and an exceptional artist. The gala has been the talk of the town and everyone is saying how much they enjoyed and appreciated it. Thanks for making it such a special evening.” Duane Wade, GBDF board member who traveled from Birmingham, Ala., lamented that, “this was a wonderful evening with top-notch entertainment. When can we bring him back to another evening of cool jazz?” Rep. Michael Wray and Northampton County Commissioner Fannie Green were just a few of the local elected officials and special guests in attendance.

James Brown, GBDF board chair and personal friend of Johnson, played a key role in getting him to the Roanoke Rapids area. GBDF is already planning to bring Johnson back to Roanoke Rapids for a repeat performance within the next few months.  For information about Johnson and his music, visit www.marcusjohnsonmusic.com.

Also during the gala, GBDF recognized several special long-standing supporters including Dr. Paulette Ingram of Roanoke Rapids; Johnny and Carolyn Lassiter of Seaboard, Honorable Judge Brenda Branch of Roanoke Rapids, Dennis Leuter of Roanoke Rapids and Shirley Best of Garysburg.

This year’s proceeds will benefit youth leadership development programs. For information about GBDF, visit www.gbdf.org or call (301) 593-0644 (Maryland) or (252) 536-3799 (North Carolina).
