JACKSON — Northampton County Health Director Sue Gay made a pitch for a new mobile office unit for the only satellite clinic in the county Monday to the Board of Commissioners.

She told the panel the current Gaston Clinic, a single wide trailer, has been used more than 30 years and is beyond repair.

Gay said that if the unit was not replaced, the clinic would have to close. Though there were a considerable number of questions posed, especially about the $17,000 in additional funding needed to purchase the new unit, commissioners unanimously voted in favor of the measure.

Having raised more than half of the projected $38,000 needed to purchase the unit, and having strong commitments from future funding sources, Gay suggested that a 15-foot-by-50-foot unit be purchased to replace a dilapidated single wide that no longer fills the clinic’s needs. It is in violation of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the American Disabilities Act.

According to Gay, the Gaston Town Board agrees that the new unit meets their building and zoning codes. She has found enough funding for the initial payment on the unit and will set up a lease-purchase agreement with the manufacturer similar to those used to purchase sheriff’s vehicles. The new clinic will have vinyl siding, it will be handicap accessible with a ramp and  have handicap accessible restrooms. Not only will it meet current standards of a commercial building, but it will also be pleasing to the eye. Gay is excited about the change. “We’re really looking forward to having a newer facility,” she said. “The other building came to us second hand 30 years ago!”

Gay also said that she appreciates the support of all those involved in the decision to acquire the new building. “We appreciate the support of the Gaston Town Council, our Board of Health for their support and the County Commissioners for supporting the decision of the Board of Health to seek outside funding for the new facility.”

All this will come at no cost to the county as all funding will come through state and federal funds.
