During the service, the chapter awarded outstanding recognition for supporting the Annual Shaw University Day fundraising event to the Rev. Robert Sessoms, pastor of the Roanoke Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Garysburg, and to the Rev. Willie Mack Greene, pastor of St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church in Weldon. Shaw Day, held the third Sunday in March each year, is the major fundraising event of the chapter to support religion and education at Shaw University. The university’s concept that education and religion go hand in hand is part of the mission of educating students. Shaw University was founded in 1865 in Raleigh and has been affiliated with the Baptist church throughout its history.

The Weldon-Seaboard Chapter was founded in 1935 in Seaboard, and has the distinction of being the oldest continuously active alumni chapter of Shaw University.
