NC House would bar lottery sales at check-cashers

RALEIGH (AP) — North Carolina lawmakers don’t want lottery tickets sold to people who have just paid to have a check or money order cashed.

The state House voted Tuesday to ban the state lottery from selling tickets at businesses that primarily cash checks or money orders. The bill comes after the lottery officials decided in March to sign a contract with Ace Cash Express to sell lottery tickets in about half of their 31 North Carolina stores.

The bill’s supporters said the combination would mean poor people who predominantly use check cashing stores would see the offer to buy lottery tickets as soon as money was put in their hands.

Opponents said people should be trusted to make their own decisions on whether to buy lottery tickets.
