ROANOKE RAPIDS — The Roanoke Rapids High School class of 2009 was celebrated Friday during the school’s annual Senior Awards Ceremony, highlighting the class’ achievements and future goals as they count down to graduation day.
Thirty-six students took the stage in the school’s auditorium to accept scholarship awards. Brandon Carlisle accepted the prestigious Park Scholarship worth $75,000, the Robert Byrd Scholarship, John Howard Scholarship, Spanish Merit Award, RRHS Best All Around (male), Rotary Math Award and Rightmyer Award. He also walked away with Valedictorian of Class 2009.
Salutatorian Emily Monds received the RJ Reynolds, State Employees, Robert Byrd and Georgia-Pacific Wood Products scholarships as well as sharing the RRHS Best All-Around Award with Carlisle.
During one of the morning’s most emotional moments, Rebecca Byrum was given the Cameron Clark Memorial Scholarship, awarded in the memory of the 19-year-old Roanoke Rapids Marine who lost his life during a motorcycle wreck in May 2009.
On June 12, approximately 185 students will graduate from RRHS. Seven of those students have already completed their requirements for graduation. Block scheduling of classes, implemented this year, afforded students more options for course selection and opportunities to graduate early or take a wider variety of course work.
During a recent survey, more than 86 percent (157) of the seniors indicated they are planning to continue their education at a college, community college or technical institute. Eight students plan to enter the Armed Forces and 8-students plan to move directly into a job. Of the students continuing their education, 36 received financial scholarships totaling more than $480,000. Nine students received full scholarships.
