Help needed to light the way for "Freedom" By Daily Herald StaffHALIFAX — Jim Singleton and more than three dozen others are working hard to reignite the flame of liberty as reflected in Max Williams’ play, “First for Freedom.” Final rehearsals began last night, “and we are working as hard as we can to finish the lights and scenery,” said Singleton, who is directing the revival of one of the state’s oldest outdoor dramas. “First for Freedom” depicts life and events that surrounded the signing of the Halifax Resolves — the first public documents setting forth the idea of freedom for America’s British colonies. But before it all comes together, the group still needs a little more help. Singleton says it needs to raise approximately $700 to cover the cost of cable for the lights and sound system, and other needs for the production. “We aren’t too far off,” he added. The play will be performed at the 4-H Rural Life Center, 13763 Highway 903 in Halifax on June 25 through July 3. “There are a lot of good theatrical people from throughout Eastern North Carolina involved in the show,” Singleton said. The play depicts one of the most important events in our history. “We were the first of the colonies to write down our convictions … It’s a wonderful story,” Singleton added. The play was performed for years at an outdoor pavilion in Halifax but it has fallen on hard times and the state closed the facility. This year it has moved to the 4-H Center with new scenery and renewed hope. Singleton stressed how the community’s support is needed to stage the production. All donations will be accepted but if you donate $100 you will be designated “Friends of First for Freedom.” A $250 donation earns patronage status and a $500 donation a “First for Freedom Angel” honor. The performances will be at 7 p.m., June 25-27, 2 p.m. on June 28 and 7 p.m. on July 2-3. On the Fourth of July, the troupe will join in the Independence Day festivities at the Historic Courthouse in Halifax. Tickets are available from the Halifax County Visitors Center, the Cooperative Extension Office, Halifax County Library, Historic Halifax State Park or the Town of Halifax offices.
