OUTRAGED!!!

On May 28,2009 I received a phone call from Roanoke Rapids High School concerning my son graduating. Two weeks before graduation and I get a call saying he will not graduate June 12,2009 with the rest of his class! That is not even why I am outraged, it is because it is not his fault! He was short one credit because of an error made by the school!!! So, we just asked because it is state and local requirement to have 22 credits will they just let him walk with the rest of the class on June 12th. He had already started making up the credit and would have been half way though the class before graduation. We got the answer "NO" because it would not be fair for the other 52 children that can not walk because they FAILED. He did not fail it was school error and they know it! What's not fair is it has made my child not want to go back to school because he feels like he is being punished for something he did not do!! I have been to the superintendent and the principle and they still said no the was nothing they could do! Well I do not see what the problem is and they wonder why kids quit school. My child is a good boy and he loves school and now he doesn't even care because of people that do not have a heart!!! He will not graduate because of a mistake made by the school!!

" Well "substitute", I think the parents should get others together and go to the school and throw out the principal, the counselor and all the teachers involved.

You are obviously part of the problem with the schools. Half the teachers and administrators, not only here, but nationwide, need to be fired and that will only happen if the city gets a better school board that will also do something other than play politics.

I admire the people that are in other countries because they are willing to do whatever it takes to make their officials do their job. If they do not do their job then they will literally throw them out. Maybe we could learn a lesson from them.

It is time for the American people to take back America and send the educated idiots out to pasture.

And most of them got their degrees in a time when we had the lowest scores worldwide in every subject. So how can we expect our kids to learn anything anyway?

As I said, we have a lot of educated idiots out there according to our own government. "

" Up until his senior year he could have taken 18 credits and this year due to the block schedule he could have taken 8 more credits. 8+18 = 26. More than enough to meet requirements for graduation. So he either failed classes and/or didn't take a full load. If he loved school so much he would not have been in this situation. Stop blaming others for yours and his mistakes! "

" I sympathize with the student here, but the blame lies in both party's hands. The teachers and counselors should have found this so much sooner if they had looked over their records, and the student should have caught this with his/herparnets when getting their class schedule for their senior year. As far as making an exception, I'd have to disagree. Yeah, it was only 1 credit, but the rest of the students that walked that stage had 22 credits; the required number. Your child had 21. Some here have been complaining about teachers playing favorites, and to let the child slide by with a 1 credit deficiancy; no matter whose mistake it was; would indeed be playing favorites. Summer school is only a few short weeks long, the child should be able to get the class he/she needs. Or the local community college may offer it, or even Nash Community College. There are other options. If your child is as dedicaed to graduating as you say OutRaged, then he/she will find a way. Early class next school year while attending HCC.... start college while you finish high school. I know many people who have done just that. Get a 2 year from HCC and save thousands on a 4 year institutions tuition fees. All of you involved in this childs education are to blame, and now you all need to stop pointing fingers and start FIXING your mistakes!! Help the child and quit delaying their life. "

    " To: Substitute.
If you are a substitute teacher (as your
ID implies) then you should know that hiding your real name does not exempt you from a teachers responsiblity to keep his or her opinions about a student to themselves. That's the problem with our school system. Teacher's and admistrators alike take sides, play favorites and quite often turn a blind eye when the "less popular" kids are being mistreated. I do recognize that there are exceptions to this. But unfortunatly some still go by the same ole rules that have governed this little town for years. "

finger at the student.I mean really,
what does being able to level a bench
have to do with staying in school for
12 years and only lacking one credit
to graduate. You seem to know so much
about this kid why didnt you get involved sooner.Your negative comments
make me wonder why people like you
ever got into the education field.I
hope you have retired by the time my
    son arrives at RRHS. "

" Whether he was a perfect student or not, what is it hurting to make an exception for a mistake, especially if both are at fault? I know that in high school, keeping up with the number of credits I had was not of great importance as much as keeping up with grades. Sometimes the administrators follow so closely by the book, they forget to use good common sense. "

" I 100% agree with the outraged parent. These teachers and guidance councelors have all year to know if seniors have all of their credits to graduate, but yet they wait until a few days before graduation to inform parents and students that their child is not graduating. This is terrible and it should be changed. This matter should not stop here but address your concerns to Washington, D.C. "

    " Outraged,
The problem is not only the school. Why is it so difficult for all parties involved to take responsiblity for their actions or lack there of. Your soon has to be advised before he can register for classes. You the parent should have had to look at his proposed schedule before the final registration date. So if you did not do your part as a parent, and he did not do his part as a the good boythat you said he is, then he deserves what he is getting. It takes everyone working together. The school can't do everything. "

" I hate what has happened to this kid, and I can see why he is so discouraged, but this goes back to what I have always believed. Parents expect the schools to raise their children. That parent should have some responsibility in this mistake as well. I am seeing my third child come through RRHS. Each and every year I am in contact with not only my children's teachers but their counselors as well. I can't beleive that as a parent embarking upon graduation that you are not in constant contact with the school in regaurds to your child's progress or lack of. Parent's please wake up and step up. These children are yours and the school can only do so much. It has to be your job to make sure they are getting everything they need. I don't know these parents but I have known too many that have never met their child's teachers and have no clue who their counselors are. They are your responsibility. Do your jobs. "

" i was at RRHS school graduation, i was outraged by a lot of things, like Mr.Sawyer and his family being let in and seat before anyone else! as for stdents graduating there were sereval students that walked across that stage that i do not know how they did it, some who were told they would not walk. but their they were, i think our school system has got to the point that they are only worried about how good they look, not about the student learning or preparing them for the future. i was very proud of the student who "earn" the honor to walk across that stage. i think RRcity schools have got lost in what is important, its not the name, its the student that attend classes and earn the right to walk across tath stage. "

" Substitute: IF you really are a teacher (which I doubt) then you should be ashamed of yourself, but then again, half the teachers in this nation should be as well. You all sat back and allowed this "No Child LEft Behind" junk to enter our schools and most of you saw a way to get around having to perform your job at even as much as an adequate level! You mostly teach to pass an EOG Test, no longer are you concerned with rather or not a child learns something of value or that may make a difference in their lives. All you are ready for is what a good portion of the un-caring students are waiting for... SUMMER BREAK!! And for you to call a student out like you did in your post rather it is true or not is a DISGRACE to teachers everywhere. You should be banned from teaching, and drug out in the street and forced to watch the mindless videos you put in front of the students as "instructional" until your brain rots. Wait.... apparently your brain has already rotted. Too Bad. If you were smarter, you might have had a chance at being a REAL teacher. "

" I totally agree with Outraged. If it was the high schools fault that her son was short by one credit to graduate and he is in the process of working towards that one credit, why can't he walk across the stage with the rest of his class. If he had actually failed this year, I could understand the schools view but not in this situation. It IS an outrage and then the school wonders why so many kids quit at the age of sixteen. Wake up Dennis Sawyer! "

" I can say that I know your son, and he does not love school! He gave the teachers more trouble than they deserved! Why was he not directly involved in keeping accurate records? Why does he get to this point and suddenly realize that he is a credit short! He barely passed woodshop because he couldn't level a bench! He was also failing another class! Don't you yourself know how many credits he had earned???? "
