Education in the Valley Grissom new member of NSCS April N. Grissom of Roanoke Rapids has accepted membership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS). Grissom will be honored during an Induction convocation this fall on the campus of North Carolina State University. “NSCS is more than just a symbol of academic achievement. Membership gives students access to a number of amazing benefits, including career and networking resources, scholarship, travel and service projects both on campus and in the community,” says Stephen E. Loflin, NSCS executive director. Grissom is a 2008 graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School and a sophomore at N.C. State University, majoring in environmental engineering. She is the daughter of David and Debbie Grissom of Roanoke Rapids. She is the granddaughter of Mabel White and the late Lloyd L. White and Marie Grissom and the late James C. Grissom, all of Roanoke Rapids. Hawkins makes dean’s list Erica Hawkins, a rising sophomore at East Carolina University, has been placed on the dean’s list for the 2008-2009 school year, with a grade point average of 3.6. She is majoring in management information systems. She is the daughter of Joe Mack and Gloria Hawkins. Brown graduates from ECU Jamie Brown graduated from East Carolina University in Greenville on May 9. He was selected for the National Dean’s List, which is one of the highest academic honors bestowed on college students. He is also president of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. He is the son of Johnny and Dorothy Brown and the grandson of Beatrice Burnette. He also has a brother, Johnny “Mike” Brown. He is also a member of Fidelity Baptist Church in Littleton. Local student serves as page The North Carolina Senate was honored recently to have Kenya Caprice Hale, a student at KIPP Pride High School, serve as a page. She is the daughter of Gladys F. Walden of Halifax. She was sponsored by Sen. Edward Jones and appointed by the Senate President Pro Tempore, Marc Basnight. Statewide high school students in grades 9 through 12 serve as pages when the General Assembly is in session. They perform valuable duties for the senators and their office staff. They attend daily Senate sessions, committee meetings and assist staff members with office duties during the week they serve in the Legislature. U.S. Achievement Academy The United States Achievement Academy announced Jamie Oliver from Roanoke Rapids has been recognized for academic achievement as a United States National Honor Student Award winner. Oliver, who attends Chaloner Middle School , will appear in the United States Achievement Academy’s Official yearbook which is published nationally. The USAA National Honor Student Awards provide honor students with many benefits and services and is a great tribute to a student’s dedication, talent and ability. He is the son of Sharon and Chuck Oliver of Roanoke Rapids and the grandson of Jean and James Nelms of Halifax, Charles and Ann Oliver of Calabash and Margaret Cook of Greenville. |
