Roanoke Valley U10 boys advance

MANTEO —  Roanoke Valley U10 All-stars Head coach Earl Wheeler was pleased with the defensive efforts of his ball squad as they committed not one error during their, 9-4, win over Currittuck during the opening round of the Eastern North Carolina Cal Ripken district tournament. The teams stayed within one or two runs of each other up until the sixth inning when Roanoke Valley opened up with four runs in the top of the inning.

Josh Elias stepped onto the mound for the Roanoke Valley All-stars and gave up a huge single plus a two run homer that put his squad behind. But the boys from the Roanoke Valley fired back with runs from there on.

 The scoring was nip and tuck from both sides with Currituck trailing, 5-3. Roanoke Valley broke those open with having hot bats at the plate to give themselves a slight cushion by scoring four more runs to have a 9-3 lead.Currituck scored another run, but was not able to score any more with Cameron Rogerson shutting down the batters as he took to the mound for Roanoke Valley. A catch at the plate by Sammy Rose for the third out ended the charge for Currituck and gave Roanoke Valley the win, not to mention a day off. Roanoke Valley will play again today at 3:30 p.m.

“It was a tight game that makes a coach have gray hairs,” Coach Wheeler said. “But my guys did play how we needed them to.”
